Job Summary

The Managing Editor\'s primary functions are to manage all procedures associated with producing six issues of the journal Educational Theory annually; to perform substantive/ developmental copyediting on manuscripts accepted for publication in the journal; to supervise, train, and coordinate the responsibilities of the journal\'s graduate student employees; and to manage and generate content for and assess the performance of the journal\'s social media accounts and to coordinate events sponsored by the journal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management of Journal Operations

Plan, manage, and serve as principal contact for all journal operations, coordinating closely with the Editor in Chief regarding these processes.

  • Managing the journal\'s submission and review site (developing and updating support documentation for authors and reviewers; serving as principal support contact); periodically assessing the platform\'s effectiveness and update needs, in consultation with the College\'s technical support staff and the Editor in Chief; researching and evaluating alternative systems, as needed.
  • Serve as principal contact/correspondent with authors regarding submissions, journal policies, permissions, etc. Review decision letters (and other correspondence, as requested) prepared by the Editor in Chief, for quality control purposes.
  • Prepare biweekly status reports regarding all active submissions and monthly reports for publication queue planning. Support the Editor in Chief in interpreting this data and planning the production queue.
  • Annually assess hardware and software needs for journal operations, in consultation with the College\'s Technical Support Staff, and advise the Editor in Chief regarding anticipated upgrade needs and in planning an optimal schedule for these.
  • Coordinate the invitation process for members of the journal\'s review board under the direction of the Editor in Chief. Initiate and monitor review process for submissions, including preparing submissions for anonymous review, corresponding with reviewers to obtain feedback for submissions in a timely manner. Maintain a log of reviewer assignments and timelines for use by the Editor in Chief and other journal staff.
  • Review monthly financial statements prepared by the College\'s Business Office. Monitor overall expenses, research and prepare reports on categories of expenses, and provide this information to the Editor in Chief for oversight purposes and to use in future planning.
  • Coordinate with contacts at the journal\'s publisher regarding journal operations issues, including periodic updating and renewal of the contract for producing the journal, annual royalty and stipend payments from the publisher, questions pertaining to the journal\'s copyright policy and open access arrangements available to authors, etc.
  • Support Editor in Chief in hiring graduate student support staff for the journal (e.g., prepare draft position announcements, job descriptions, and decision/offer letters for applicants). Supervise, train, and prepare support materials for graduate student employees; assign tasks/projects and monitor their work; and provide feedback as needed.
  • Gather and analyze annual statistics data for journal submissions, including rates of decision categories, submission turnaround rates, and reviewer statistics for use by the Editor in Chief in planning and to generate reports for the journal\'s Sponsoring Societ es.

Management of Journal Production

Responsible for copyediting accepted manuscripts, coordinating authors\' review/final revision process, providing all content for each journal issue (currently 6 annually) to the publisher\'s Production Editor, and reviewing and approving layout of content and cover at each stage of layout.

Correspond with authors regarding schedule for the copyediting and publication process; distribute copyright assignment forms, and ensure that signed forms for all content have been returned prior to production.

Copyedit accepted submissions to ensure conformance with journal style, including undertaking substantive/developmental editing of manuscripts as needed and providing editing for English coherence and clarity in the case of EAL manuscripts. Such editing requires research in philosophy of education and related fields to ensure accuracy of suggested revisions and of citation information. Prepare style sheets for manuscripts to ensure consistent practice within and (as appropriate) across manuscripts.

Keep the publisher\'s Production Editor apprised of issues pertaining to schedule, special content (artwork, tables, supplementary materials, etc.), and any other matters that might affect layout and production flow.
