The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MechSE) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites applications for teaching faculty at the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor. We seek highly qualified applicants with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching with a commitment to scholarship and service. This is a full-time on-campus appointment on an academic year (nine-month) service basis, paid over twelve months.
Teaching faculty are expected to teach undergraduate courses at all levels, in broad areas of mechanical engineering, including manufacturing and robotics. A link to the MechSE course offerings may be found at: Course List .
Teaching faculty are considered specialized faculty at UIUC. This is a non-tenure system faculty position that includes a ranking progression (Assistant, Associate, and Full) that is typically appointed on a multi-year, rolling contract. While our teaching faculty are focused on instruction, they should also make substantial contributions through pedagogical and/or disciplinary research, and service. Their scope of work is more specific than their tenure-system peers and the performance expectations are defined under Provost Communication 25 .
A Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, or a related field is required. Ideal candidates include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service endeavors. Competitive applicants will show the promise of excellence in teaching, and at advanced ranks will possess a strong record of teaching and scholarship in engineering pedagogy and/or disciplinary research.
Successful applicants will join the department\'s thriving community of creative, passionate, and innovative faculty who contribute to high-quality instruction, curriculum development, and student mentoring. Teaching faculty also engage in research, outreach, and service activities, and are expected to develop active research programs in engineering pedagogy, and/or disciplinary scholarship related to the departmental mission.
The budgeted salary range for the position is \$90,000 to \$100,000 at the Teaching Assistant Professor Level, \$100,000 to 110,000 at the Teaching Associate Professor level and \$110,000 to \$120,00 at the Teaching Professor level, for a 9-month service basis. The preferred starting date is August 16, 2025, for the Fall 2025 semester. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
