Job Summary

Primary Function: The College of Law Associate Director of Human Resources oversees the recruitment, development, and retention of faculty, researchers, and administrative staff within the College of Law. The Associate Director also administers compensation and benefits, fosters a positive and inclusive academic environment, and ensures compliance with employment laws and institutional policies. Additionally, they play a strategic role in workforce planning, supporting diversity and equity initiatives, and addressing employee relations to promote collaboration and academic excellence within the institution. They also supervise the HR team in the College of Law.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Direct HR Operations for the College of Law

    Guide and assist administrators and employees with interpretation and implementation of college and campus/university policies and American Bar Association procedures and requirements regarding faculty, academic professional and civil service issues.

    Lead the daily HR operations for all employee groups, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, employee relations, recognition, professional development, and exit processes.

    Serve as contact for the Office of Access and Equity (OAE) and IHR on hiring activity and act as a Department Classifier.

    Develop, implement, and manage internal onboarding, orientation programs, exit interviews, and retention strategies.

    Manage immigration and foreign national compensation efforts; coordinate with University Payroll, University Tax and ISSS.

    Support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and Affirmative Action practices.

    Promote employee well-being through safety and health initiatives, recognition programs, ergonomic assessments, anti-harassment efforts and counseling services referrals.

  • Employee Relations and Organizational Health (30%)

    Conduct proactive staff outreach to improve organizational health and culture.

    Advise directors and supervisors on employee performance, morale, discipline, and terminations in collaboration with campus offices.

    Advise employees and supervisors on labor and employee relations laws, including FMLA, ADA, Workers\' Compensation, and other leave options.

    Serve as an Intake Specialist for employee concerns.

    Coordinate semi-annual Adjunct Professor hiring for both Champaign and Chicago programs, including identifying new recruiting sources and ensuring diverse applicant pools.

    Support Dual Career Appointments.

    Evaluate civil service and academic professional positions for proper classification and compensation; ensure internal parity; develop career paths; authorize recommendations and requests for final determination by IHR.

  • Contribute to Campus-wide HR Efforts

    Represent College of Law at HR Caucus meetings, at OAE and IHR events, and at other relevant meetings and events such as campus job fairs.

    Provide input on HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal, state, university, and campus regulations.

    Stay urrent with university HR laws and policies.

    Communicate university policy updates to College of Law area managers.

    Ensure compliance with positive time reporting, academic vacation/sick leave reporting, and other relevant policies.

  • Assist with College of Law compensation (10%)

    Oversee the performance evaluation assessment of all staff

    In conjunction with the Director of Budget and Resource Planning, provide recommendations to the Dean on the annual salary program.

    Support the Dean and Associate Dean in developing faculty offers, chair appointments, retention agreements, counteroffers and research stipends.

  • Additional HR duties and/or duties appropriate for an Associate Director, as assigned by the Director of Budget Resource Planning, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, or the Dean of the College of Law
