JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Student in this position will provide care for pigs and collect data for a pig project with Penn State at the Livestock Evaluation Center.

  • Learn and assist with routine pig care at the Livestock Evaluation Center and also various duties in Hines' lab.

  • Maintain accurate records and submit them daily in digital format.

  • Ensure that the farm's work environment is safe by using safety equipment and following safety protocols.

  • Follow animal welfare policies and procedures including: providing a physical environment that meets the animals’ needs; provide access to adequate water and high-quality feed; provide humane treatment of the animals; provide identification and appropriate treatment of the animals in need of health care; and follow the guidelines for euthanasia.

  • Handle animals appropriately to facilitate data collection.

    Position responsibilities may also include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead daily chores and record keeping

  • Facilitate communication of animal health with supervisor in a prompt manner

  • Assist in emergency animal care when needed.

    ENTRY LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • No experience necessary.

  • Must be willing to learn to understand animal behaviors.

  • Must be able to tolerate and willing to learn and perform the following tasks: euthanasia, ear tagging, tattooing, pressure washing other procedures normal to animal husbandry.

  • Must be able to tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions.

  • This position requires one who can multi-task and be a team player.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Must be supportive of the mission of raising swine for meat. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation. Some weekend and holiday work will be required.

  • Start times may vary based on tasks to be completed each day.
