JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to conduct and manage research investigating bacterial blotch in mushrooms caused by Pseudomonas species for a 7-million-dollar USDA/SCRI funded project. The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct or coordinate research using our collection of bacterial mushroom pathogens to investigate pathogen virulence factors, identify the bioactive compounds from medicinal mushrooms inhibitory to blotch pathogens, understand the impacts of treatments on blotch populations in the context of the mushroom microbiome and describe the diversity of the pathogens causing blotch in US mushroom farms across environments. The scholar will plan, conduct and analyze research, synthesize data, prepare and scientific manuscripts, and present research results at local and national scientific conferences. The incumbent help with the training of graduate and undergraduate researchers and gain experience in grant project management through the coordination of blotch related goals. This position requires a PhD in plant pathology, microbiology, microbial ecology or related field. Competitive candidates must have significant sequence analysis and microbiology experience and possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (both oral and written) skills. A desire to participate in Penn State One Health Microbiome Center activities, as well as provide outreach to groups underrepresented in STEM fields will be viewed positively. This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire with a good possibility of re-funding.
