JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University (https://psu.edu) Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking an EHS Specialist. We are looking for an individual with broad knowledge and experience in aspects relating to Environmental Protection programs including hazardous materials management, sampling, and evaluation of environmental hazards. This position is a critical part of the team in helping to achieve the vision and mission of the department and provides support to ensure compliance with applicable standards, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

In this role, the position serves to conduct activities to advance the environmental, health, and safety programs and objectives of the department.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct small-scale hazardous building material surveys within University buildings and facilities.

  • Provide general support for the Hazardous Materials programs (hazardous and universal wastes) to further group mission and assist other EHS staff with compliance initiatives including inspections, recordkeeping, profiling, and supply management.

  • Complete other EHS related inspections and assessments in accordance with EHS Standards to determine compliance with University Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.

  • Provide general support for data quality management issues relating to the EHS information management system. Tracks department adherence to established guidance, defined workflows, and metrics within system.

  • Promote the advancement of the PSU safety culture for customers and acts as the EHS liaison for University stakeholders.

  • Assist with monitoring corrective and preventive action programs relative to EHS standards to determine compliance with University Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.

  • Participate on EHS team and provides services to other EHS programs as needed.

  • Part of an emergency response team and serve as a hazardous material spill responder.

Education and Experience:

Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree, preferably in occupational safety, environmental science, engineering, or closely related field, and one year of related work experience in a manufacturing, scientific research, technical, or healthcare setting; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Must be capable of demonstrating PSU-supplied safety equipment and lifting/moving materials weighing up to 35 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be capable of utilizing respiratory protection equipment including negative-pressure respirators. Must be capable of climbing ladders. Must be reachable and accessible for emergencies during work and off-hours via phone and email.

Background check:

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

Must have PA Dept. Of Labor and Industries Asbestos Building Inspector license and DOT Hazmat Shipping accredited certificate or the ability to achieve these within 6 months upon hire.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$56,200.00 - $81,500.00
