JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Penn State invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor appointment with expertise in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and related fields. The successful candidate will contribute to the departmental teaching mission through some combination of the following: teaching lab and research-based courses, coordinating labs and mentoring graduate TAs, teaching introductory or advanced undergraduate lecture courses, undergraduate student advising, and service to the department or college.

We seek individuals who have a demonstrated commitment to the teaching profession with evidence of excellent, inclusive, and engaging teaching. Work expectations for the position include fall, spring, and summer duties, with time for curriculum development and improvement over the summer. Professional development opportunities are also supported and encouraged. This is a non-tenure-line, term position with an excellent possibility of renewal. This appointment will be filled at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor or Associate Teaching Professor. Rank and length of term are determined by education and qualifications.

Competitive applicants will have:

· PhD in appropriate field

· Experience teaching at least one course as either the lead or assistant instructor

· Ability to achieve teaching excellence at both introductory and advanced undergraduate levels

· Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community in the practice and teaching of science

· Teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy and interests, evidence that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in teaching and improving pedagogical practices, and a diversity statement (all compiled into one document). As a part of the teaching dossier, applicants are asked to submit materials that demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence. These materials could include any of the following:

· A recorded lesson with a personal reflection on the lesson

· Results and reflection from a teaching practices inventory

· Syllabi authored by you for a class that you have taught or a class that you would like to teach

· Student or peer evaluations from previous teaching experiences

· Example teaching materials that candidate has developed

· Peer reviewed articles authored on teaching related topics

· Other materials that can demonstrate candidate’s understanding of and commitment to research-based teaching practices

· Awards and recognition for teaching and teaching-related scholarly activities (brief explanation for why you had been recognized should be provided)
