Laboratory Assistant – Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least FOUR months preceding the date of the written test.

Please Note: The successful candidate must take and pass the Rensselaer County Civil Service exam for Laboratory Assistant, when offered, and be reachable on the Laboratory Assistant list to qualify for permanent appointment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a regionally accredited New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning or a closely related field; or graduation from High School or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of full-time paid experience performing skilled services in the HVAC field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits above.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES: The Laboratory Assistant performs work under general supervision of professional staff with latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgement in carrying out the details of the assignments in accordance with definitely define procedures. The Laboratory Assistant reports to the Department Chair and or designee and performs the following duties:

• Prepares supplies and equipment for HVAC laboratory use.

• Repairs and maintains HVAC laboratory equipment.

• Orders, maintains and controls inventory for laboratory supplies.

• Maintains the safety and security of laboratory area.

• Issues laboratory equipment and supplies to students.

• Prepares and maintains a variety of related records and reports.

• Performs related tasks as required.

• This position will require travel between the Troy and Malta Campuses.

This is a 40-hour 12-month position with an hourly rate of $23.90.
