SUMMARY The NICU Qualified Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides care for all ages of patients. In addition to covering the general and pediatric nursing units and adult critical care areas (including PACU and ED), this therapist also accepts patient care assignments in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and is a member of the NICU Transport Team.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Licensed Respiratory Therapist in the State of Michigan is required (applications accepted for respiratory therapists eligible to apply). Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required. Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS) and Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACC) through the NBRC are preferred. Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) is preferred and is required within the first 6 months of hire. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is preferred. ORGANIZATION: This position is under the direct supervision of the Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinators. It reports to, and is indirectly supervised, by the Respiratory Care Manager. Provides direction to and supervision of Respiratory Technicians, Interns, Aides and Students. Following training and competency assessment some NICU qualified RRT’s accept the charge/lead therapist assignment in the absence of a Clinical Coordinator. Works collaboratively and effectively with all members of the Patient Care Team. ALL AGES OF PATIENTS SERVED – Birth and above SPECIFIC DUTIES 1. Supports the Mission, Vision and Values of Munson Healthcare. 2. Embraces and supports the Performance Improvement philosophy of Munson Healthcare. 3. Promotes personal and patient safety. 4. Uses effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times. 5. Performs all routine respiratory care including oxygen and continuous aerosol therapy, aerosol treatments, MDI/DPI administration, chest physiotherapy/postural drainage, incentive spirometry, intermittent positive pressure breathing, PEP therapy, continuous positive pressure, tracheostomy care and continuous medicated aerosol therapy, as per department policy and procedure. 6. Performs monitoring and diagnostic procedures including oximetry, capnometry, transcutaneous gas monitoring, blood gas draws, weaning parameters, and peak flow measurements as per department policy and procedure. 7. Performs emergency airway management and functions as a member of the Code Blue, Pediatric Code White, and Medical Response (MRT) Teams and Delivery Response Team. Selected therapists, following inservice and demonstrated proficiency, may provide endotracheal intubation. 8. Performs ventilator care and management in the adult and neonatal intensive care units. Performs non-invasive ventilator care and management in various areas of the hospital. 9. Attends high-risk deliveries to provide infant resuscitation and airway care. 10. Serves as a member of the NICU transport team assisting with the stabilization and support of infants during external transport via ground or air modalities. 11. Performs respiratory care assessments for all patients cared for. Individualizes a plan of care utilizing provider-ordered and medical staff approved Respiratory Care Protocols. 12. Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP). 13. Performs continuous quality improvement measurements as directed by the Respiratory Care Manager. 14. Enters charges for procedures and care provided. 15. Maintains infection control practices in performance of work duties. Assists with routine equipment processing and supply stocking. 16. Accesses information via Power Chart. Routinely prints reports and verifies accuracy of active Respiratory Care orders, following up to correct incomplete or inaccurate orders. Assures discontinued orders are completed to remove them from the active orders listing. 17. Utilizes Outlook to facilitate department communication. Regularly attends department meetings to provide input and stay informed. 18. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
