Job Description

This position manages the overall safety and security of tenants, staff, contractors and public at Bay Adelaide Centre consisting of 3 million square feet of commercial office space.

The role will oversee all security staffing and physical equipment needs at the property including 3rd Party contractors to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, regulations, corporate standards and contractual obligations. This also includes leadership in tactical operations, in tenant engagement activities and in fostering positive relationships with external partners including PATH-COMM, 52 Division and the Community Response Unit for Toronto Police who provide front line support to the property. Managerial oversight of the internal security and life safety team will include continued mentorship and development.

Bay Adelaide Centre is an office complex in the Financial District of Toronto. The complex comprises an entire city block.

The first tower, Bay Adelaide West, was completed in 2009 with 108,000 square meters (1,160,000 sq. ft) and a height of 218 meters (715 ft) or 51 storeys. It is located on the Northeast corner of Bay Street and Adelaide Street West.

The second tower, Bay Adelaide East, was completed in 2015 with a square footage of 91,045 square meters (980,000 sq. ft) and a height of 44 storeys. Located mid-block between Adelaide Street West and Temperance Street, the tower has a 6-storey podium extending to the Northwest corner of Yonge Street and Adelaide Street West.

The third and final tower, Bay Adelaide North was completed in 2022 with approximately 46,450 square meters (820,000 sq. ft) and a height of 32 storeys. The North Tower is located on the Northside of Temperance Street facing Richmond Street West.

The complex is approximately 3,000,000 sq. ft. Over the last decade, Bay Adelaide Centre has established itself as one of the preeminent business addresses in Toronto’s financial core.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee daily Security Operations and ensure tenant security concerns are addressed in a timely, effective, and diplomatic manner and provide assistance where possible.

  • Debrief incidents to identify gaps and develop or enhance procedures to mitigate risks.

  • Work with the National Security team to develop/implement/revise policies and procedures.

  • Meet with owners, principals, and tenants to discuss security-related concerns and resolutions.

  • Coordinate Fire Warden training and provide regular tenant rep meetings and training on building security and life safety procedures such as fire drills, bomb threats, etc.

  • Ensure incidents are documented, investigated, and recorded for insurance and liability purposes. These include slip and fall or criminal activity.

  • Act as liaison for related needs like gathering forms, reports or documentation for other compliance and regulatory purposes.

  • Mentor, develop and motivate staff, lead by example, and provide/share knowledge with the team as may be required.

  • Manage 3rd Party contractors by liaising with management to ensure SLAs are being met including staffing levels, training, and that operational equipment like CCTV/ACMS are maintained.

  • Tender contracts as needed include recommendations, vender selection and award.

  • Stay current with trends and technology and encourage staff to continue personal development and participation within the property team and in the Security field including appropriate industry associations and municipal departments.

  • Foster effective relationships with external parties including first responders and social services.

  • Participate in the budget planning process as it pertains to Security and Life Safety, including the preparation of the annual business plan, the 3-year Security plan, 10-year capital plans.

  • Prepare recommendations for security upgrades, research, obtain quotations and issue PO’s.

  • Prepare appropriate sections of the monthly asset report for General Managers use.

QUALIFICATIONS

SERVICE / PERSONAL SKILLS:

This position requires a professional, dedicated team player with a strong commitment to excellent customer service. Excellent problem solving, negotiating and decision-making skills are essential to successfully fulfilling the role. Excellent written and verbal communication, prioritization and organizational skills are required. The ideal candidate must work well in a high-pressure environment, both independently and with a team and must be comfortable interacting with all levels of the organization and with external partners. Proven management and leadership skills are critical to the role as is the ability to train, develop and motivate staff and teams in the performance of their duties.

EXPERIENCE & TECHINCAL SKILLS:

  • Minimum of 10yrs direct managerial experience in security and life safety, overseeing a security team and managing daily operations of a large multi-use complex.

  • Experience working in a high-rise commercial multi-use complex and familiarity working with ACMS and CCTV is preferred.

  • Must be knowledgeable in security legislation, fire and life safety systems and conducting workplace investigations.

  • Experience in interviewing, motivating, leading, and mentoring staff.

  • Emergency response planning experience.

  • Minimum 5yrs experience in developing/managing budgets.

  • A strong history of community involvement and leadership is an asset.

  • Excellent operational knowledge of fire alarm and security systems including ACMS, intercoms, elevator controls, 2-way radios, telephones, duress system, CCTV, CCURE, and key control.

  • Strong skills in MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook within an Office/Windows environment.

EDUCATION/DESIGNATIONS/LICENSES:

  • Completion of post-secondary education, such as College or University

  • Strong working knowledge of the criminal code as it applies to trespass, young offenders etc.

  • Industry recognized certification (CPP) or equivalent experience and training.

  • Must be knowledgeable with the PSISA and relevant workplace health and safety legislation including OHSA, WHMIS and Workplace Violence (requires federal, provincial, and local legislation knowledge).

  • Must be able to obtain Level 2 Security Clearance with the Government of Canada if required.
