Field and Laboratory Technician

Description

Reporting to the Director of the National Center for Water Quality Research, the Field and Laboratory Technician will lead the summer soil sampling campaign for the H2Ohio wetlands project. This consists of conducting fieldwork to collect samples, organizing and shipping samples to BGSU for analysis,  and any other needed follow-up data entry and project organization. Some time may be spent on other activities, especially the other H2Ohio Wetlands sampling needs and the Heidelberg Tributary Loading Program.  

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports directly to the Director of the National Center for Water Quality Research.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

The Field and Lab Technician may supervise student employees. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring (75%) 

Manage the soil sampling fieldwork from wetlands throughout Northwest Ohio. This includes scheduling the sampling dates, preparing for sampling collection, and organizing field crews needed for assistance. 

Manage data entry and back up following fieldwork

Update monitoring protocols and plans as needed

Attend project meetings and workshops

Assist the wetland research technician and student interns with any other needed wetland sampling

  1. Other field and laboratory activities (25%)

As needed, assist with the Heidelberg Tributary Loading Program sample preparation and analysis, data management, field station maintenance and repair, and weekly sample collection.

Education and Professional Experience:

(A)  Completion of a Bachelor of Science in the Natural Sciences, Engineering, or a related field. 

(B)  Experience conducting wetland field research.

(C)  Knowledge and excitement of aquatic and wetland ecosystems.

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

Experience in sampling wetlands for water, sediment, and soils.

(B)  Experience using chemical analysis to quantify nutrient concentrations in water.

(C)  Experience using handheld sensors to monitor water quality.
