What you will do

Amgen's Center for Observational Research (CfOR) is a global organization with an industry-leading research design and analysis capability that generates RWE to support business needs across a product’s lifecycle. CfOR scientists’ partner with internal stakeholders and external collaborators to design, conduct, interpret and publish observational research studies (in peer-reviewed journals or through submissions to various health authorities) to inform healthcare decision-making. CfOR scientists contribute to the research, development and commercialization of Amgen’s medicines beginning prior to first-in-human studies and extending throughout the product lifecycle (phases 1-4).

In this vital role, as Executive Director, Observational Research, you will lead the Obesity Franchise, which includes a large team of epidemiologists and data scientists. This individual will join the CfOR Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and contribute the management of the organization.

Within the industry landscape, increasing demand for observational research (now commonly referred to as real-world evidence [RWE]) from regulatory and reimbursement authorities makes observational research a key component of drug development and commercialization.

This individual is recognized as a thought leader in the field and is frequently a senior author on papers in peer reviewed journals or for internal reports that enhance the company’s mission. This role will primarily be located on the Amgen corporate campus in Thousand Oaks, CA, but remote opportunities may also be available.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the successful management of the Center as member of the leadership team, including the development and execution of Center goals and key strategic initiatives, delivery of high-quality, decision-enabling RWE, and support for continuous improvement efforts

  • Hire, manage and develop staff within the obesity franchise area

  • Develop high-functioning teams and promote an inclusive environment that enables all staff to achieve their full potential

  • Support effective engagement with commercialization teams including the evidence generation team (EGT), the precision medicine (PMED) team and the Access & Use team in the development of product strategy, strategic product plans, and research execution

  • Develop and manage the obesity franchise area budget

  • Develop and manage resourcing plans at the obesity franchise area level

  • Set annual obesity franchise area goals

  • Oversee the design and execution of observational studies

  • Develop and implement global observational research plans to advance understanding of the nature and burden of diseases, outcomes, risk factors and the benefits and risks of therapeutic interventions

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of risk management plans

  • Contribute to study design, data analysis, and report preparation for post-marketing commitment (PMC) studies and post-authorization safety studies (PASS)

  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with key observational opinion leaders and other industry leaders

  • Stay abreast of latest developments in the field of epidemiology in drug development and contribute to scientific advances in the field

  • Promote understanding of stare-of-the-art epidemiological methodology and data sources

  • Promote and communicate observational research awareness and the role of the Center (internal/external; scientific/process)

  • Communicate and/or present scientific/technical information and knowledge to a diverse set of audiences

  • Speaks for the obesity franchise area within Amgen and with external entitles

We are all different, yet we all use our unique contributions to serve patients. The Executive Director we seek is an experienced leader with the following qualifications.

Basic Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of experience in the Epidemiology field (with high epidemiologic content) OR

  • Master’s degree & 10 years of experience in the Epidemiology field OR

  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of experience in the Epidemiology field AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., in Epidemiology or other subject with high observational research content with 15+ years of post-graduate experience

  • Medical degree with master’s degree in Epidemiology or field with high epidemiologic content

  • Published in epidemiology or clinical journals

  • 10 years of experience and demonstrated expertise in the design, execution, and analysis of epidemiology studies within the biopharmaceutical or public health setting (government or academia)

  • Experience in the design and execution of observation research studies within the biopharmaceutical or public health setting

  • Strong publication record / national reputation in the field

  • Experience managing large teams and developing talent

  • Budget planning and expenditure management

  • Project planning and management

  • Expert knowledge of large databases relevant to epidemiologic research

  • Excellent verbal and writing communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams

  • Drug development process & operations

  • Mastery of global regulatory requirements for pharmacovigilance and experience using RWD to evaluate the benefit: risk therapeutic interventions

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $280,272 – $360,843.
