WSP USA Distribution Engineer - Electrical (Intermediate) in Thornhill, Ontario

To meet our growth challenges, WSP is currently seeking a Distribution Engineer (Electrical) to join our National Electrical Team, located in Ontario - ideally Thornhill, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Toronto, Kitchener or Ottawa.
This position will play a crucial role for conceptual, preliminary, and final design of overhead and underground distribution facilities ranging in voltage from 4.16 kV - 34.5 kV. Focus will be on design of distribution systems both urban and rural. This role involves close collaboration with clients and stakeholders to understand their engineering needs, ensuring successful project coordination. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise and consulting experience, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

What you can expect to do here:
You will design and analyze overhead and underground distribution systems using distribution design software;
You will design overhead lines using RUS pole top and other assemblies based on client standards;
You will prepare staking sheets;
You will assemble bid packages for construction of the overhead line designs;
You will apply strong knowledge of CSA and CEC and (utility standards depending on the region) other applicable codes for the design of overhead and underground distribution systems;
You will conduct feasibility studies, including estimates, preliminary modelling and electrical clearance checks;
You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, and other stakeholders to incorporate design requirements and ensure seamless project execution;
You will review and markup drawings to ensure they meet client and design expectations;
You will stay informed about the latest developments in powerline engineering and incorporate best practices into project designs;
You will liaise with government agencies, municipalities, and other regulatory bodies to obtain necessary permits and ensure compliance with local regulations;
You will prepare reports and documentation required for approvals, permits, and project updates;
You will prepare construction scopes and design basis for overhead and underground systems projects;
You will conduct site visits as required ensuring to provide support during the construction phase of projects;
You will seek opportunities to improve design efficiency and quality;
You will foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the engineering team, promoting best practices and adherence to industry standards;
You will guide and mentor junior engineers.
What you’ll bring to WSP:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree;
Registration as an EIT or P.Eng in your province of residence;
Minimum of 4+ years direct experience in distribution line design or a combination of experience and education, ideally within a consulting environment;
Experience with all voltages from 4.16kV to 34.5kV preferred;
Proficient in overhead and underground system analysis software such as PLS CADD, Stakeout or other distribution design software;
Strong knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems, with a deep understanding of industry standards and regulations;
Familiarity with relevant safety standards, utility codes, and regulatory requirements;
Excellent communication, presentation, organizational and writing skills a must as candidates will be responsible for client interface and the preparation of project design documents including technical design, plan & profile, (structure spotting), staking sheets, contracts and specifications;
Willingness to travel as needed for project assessments, meetings and on-site support.
