This role is part of the newly formed Texas Institute for Restorative Technologies (TIRN). Our lab uses advanced manufacturing approaches and creative ideas to develop new approaches to brain-computer interface systems including high-density sensors, novel form factors, integrated electronics, and wireless interfaces. This position will be a critical team member in our effort to develop and test novel packing approaches in translational bioelectronics (www.seymourlab.org)

Position Summary:

The primary purpose of the Medical Device Technician is to assist in the development and assembly of neurosurgical medical devices. They will work in close proximity with the research engineers to build and test devices, and transition from prototype designs to production.

Lab members will benefit from a close interaction with our growing team and collaborating experts in the fields of materials science, mixed-mode circuits, and system design, neurosurgery, and machine learning. Our lab is also located in the Biosciences Research Collaborative at Rice University and part the Rice Neuroengineering Initiative, thus collaborations are possible with faculty at UTHealth, Rice University, and Baylor College of Medicine. Our front-end fabrication is performed at the Rice Nanofab facility.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Provides assistance and support for building, prototype assembly and testing medical devices.

  • Performs validation and verification procedures.

  • Works with existing protocols to improve assemble procedures, and/or develop new procedures.

  • Assists engineers with other assigned duties.

  • Maintains a clean, organized lab and test equipment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

None

  • Good experimental and organizational skills are a must.

  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint.

  • Understands a sense of urgency and deadlines.

  • Attention-to-detail to ensure lab staff and equipment work together efficiently.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in collaboration with coworkers and multiple principal investigators. Desired · Previous experience in microfabrication or additive manufacturing tools is a bonus, and additional training will be provided· Mechanical aptitude, which includes the ability to design in CAD using programs like Fusion 360, AutoCAD, Sketchup, or KLayout, etc· Neuroelectronics experience· Medical device industry experience· Benchtop electrical testing

Minimum Education:

Associate's Degree required.

May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.

Minimum Experience:

1 year of experience required.

Previous experience in electronics assembly including soldering, solder reflow, die bonding, and post-assembly inspection and testing preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:
