McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), a leading academic health center, invites applicants to apply to the Advanced Care Provider Coordinator position as a part of the UTHealth Houston Children’s Heart Institute, Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Division.

This role works with and serves as a liaison for the Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners– Acute Care working in the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (CMHH HCICU).

Position Summary:

Coordinates NP and/or PA services in both a clinical and administrative role, in the Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (HICU). Coordinates staffing and orientation of assigned team members. Plans and conducts ongoing education and training. Maintains infection control/safety standards and be committed to providing and promoting patient-centered communication and care. Schedule includes a mixed rotation of shifts covering weekdays, nights, swing, holidays, and weekends.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Conducts complex, standardized patient care procedures which require experience and specialized training which would otherwise be performed by a physician, but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.

  2. Conducts independent and physician-supervised rounding on the Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (HICU).

  3. Performs relevant patient evaluations and assessments, and provides appropriate treatment; including monitoring and ordering medications.

  4. Coordinates, directs, and implements the patient’s plan of care

  5. Orders appropriate laboratory, diagnostic, and radiographic tests, and interprets results.

  6. Monitors the treatment program of the patient to inform the attending physician of pertinent medical information.

  7. Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner on the patient's medical record.

  8. Duties may include coordinating volunteer faculty, developing a calendar of events for department, and serving on committees to improve quality of patient care and to prepare for accreditation.

  9. Coordinates administrative services of Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants, and handles continuing education functions such as in-services and seminar series.

  10. Coordinates annual performance reviews in collaboration with assigned supervising physicians. This includes assuring compliance with all aspects of licensure and credentialing for assigned APPs.

  11. Attends, participates, contributes to and represents APPs in the assigned areas of responsibility on group/practice, facility or system-wide committees and/or meetings.

  12. Participates on hospital committees and task forces representing patient or community interests, and plans, develops, and implements a system designed to meet regulatory requirements for all Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.

  13. Performs all record keeping and report submission required by regulatory agencies and committees.

  14. Develops a system to meet all Continuous Quality Improvement requirements.

  15. Responds to emergency situations.

  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Have or be eligible for a DEA license

Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Current Texas Licensure as an APRN-NP OR

Current Texas Licensure and Certification as a Physician Assistant

Current specialty certification as required by the department, excluding FNP certification unless paired with a post master’s certification in specialty. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified or specialty certification as required by department

Minimum Education:

Masters in Nursing as NP or Masters degree in Nursing with completion of a post-master Nurse Practitioner Certification Program OR Masters degree as PA.

Minimum Experience:

Four years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
