The Surface Transportation org is expanding and introducing new capabilities to our Maintenance business that supports all Middle Mile assets (tractors, trailers, containers, box trucks, and hostlers). Surface Transportation is seeking to hire a Senior Manager, Maintenance to help develop a world class middle mile transportation maintenance organization that delivers high asset uptime at low cost. The Senior Manager for this team will have the opportunity to own the fleet maintenance field and central teams that focus on improving uptime and reducing maintenance cost. Our customers are leaders across Amazon who need support for cross-functional complex transportation problems. The Senior Manager will be able to act as a large team leader developing long-term vision, implementing strategies, and corresponding roadmaps using data, tools, and mechanisms. The Senior Manager has the opportunity to act as a bridge between operations teams and technology teams. The Senior Manager can think on behalf of customers to solve complex operations problems by implementing scalable mechanisms that can be automated.

Key job responsibilities

• Provide leadership, mentor and manage centrally and field-based fleet maintenance leaders in the Middle Mile transportation network.

• Develop and implement reliability plans that support increasing the Uptime of our assets

• Work with program managers, business leaders, and executive teams to drive critical business initiatives

• Develop, implement, and govern Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reporting for a portfolio of programs, providing visibility to the milestones and performance across all projects

• Provide oversight for budget development and execution

• Drive network-level performance improvement with our internal and external partners by designing and implementing systems, metrics and programs that maximize compliance and continuous improvement. This includes completion of root cause analysis on all defects and using these data to drive continuous improvement activities.

• Help create a world-class Maintenance organization; recruit, interview, and hire bar raising talent for Fleet Maintenance organization

About the team

Working in partnership with customers including Transportation Operations Management (TOM), Amazon Freight Partner (AFP), Middle Mile Route Opportunity (MMRO), and beyond while partnering with a central Maintenance Program organization, the Senior Manager Maintenance will lead a combined team of central and field-based fleet maintenance leaders. The team will consist of a central team based in Tempe, Arizona that works in conjunction with a set of field based Uptime Managers and Fleet Asset Specialists who are deployed throughout our operations network to manage uptime and reduce cost of repairs for our middle mile fleet assets. The team is responsible for day to day performance of our assets while also identifying projects that ensure reliability of our assets and reduce the onset of defects. A key responsibility is working with internal and external partners to identify root causes for downtime and help determine needed systems, metrics and programs that will lead to improve performance moving forward.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 9+ years of cross functional project delivery experience

  • Experience defining program requirements and using data and metrics to drive improvements

  • Experience in team management

  • 9+ years of experience in manufacturing, maintenance, supply chain, logistics or warehousing

  • Mechanical and technical aptitude. Familiarity thinking about complex systems

  • Experience using Excel to conduct statistical analysis of data sets

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA

  • Experience implementing repeatable processes and driving automation or standardization

  • Proven ability to influence others, facilitate agreement among stakeholders with different interests

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, track record of building strong relationships

  • Proven track record of complex and creative problem solving and the desire to create and build new processes

  • Strong critical thinking skills with ability to challenge normal operations

  • Excellent business judgment and a practical, common sense approach to getting things done

  • Strong data extraction, analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work with large, complex data sets and familiarity with statistics or other analytical techniques

  • Strong document writing skills
