Department Summary:
As part of MITRE’s Software Engineering Innovation Center we focus on delivering software across MITRE's sites. We leverage our wide geographic footprint and diverse skillsets to work side-by-side with end users and sponsors. Being in the field allows us to better understand our sponsors' needs so we can bring MITRE to bear to deliver exactly what is needed.
Roles & Responsibilities:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Software Engineer to join our team. This individual will play a key role in designing, developing, and testing software applications for our DoD Sponsors to meet both functional and non-functional requirements, including performance and security. The ideal candidate will have deep domain expertise and a passion for collaborating directly with our Sponsors and end users to create innovative solutions for operational challenges and accelerate the delivery of healthy software systems. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
Sponsor and End User Collaboration: Engage directly with customers to gather requirements, understand their needs, and ensure that the software solutions address their pain points effectively in operations. Provide expert guidance on software upgrades, migration strategies, and system optimizations.
Software Architecture: Design and plan the architecture of software systems, ensuring that all components and subsystems work cohesively to deliver high-quality products.
Design and Development: Analyze user needs and lead development efforts ensuring the software meets functional requirements as well as performance, security, and scalability needs.
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 7 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 4 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
Strong technical leader, with experience leading software delivery projects
Technical competency to peer review our staff’s work
Collaborative and able to work in a close-knit environment
An entrepreneurial spirit with experience shaping work programs
Active Top Secret clearance is required for consideration
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of how to apply software solutions to solve operational problems in one or more warfighting domain
Ability to engage with operational users, and have challenging conversations in a respectful, empathetic, and productive manner

Top Secret
