The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Community Health Nursing Supervisor:

The Community Health Nursing Supervisor is a professional position that works for the Disease Control Division at the Refugee Program. The person in this role must be a professionally qualified Registered Nurse with the necessary experience, education, licensure, and teaching skills, as well as the ability to make sound judgments in both nursing practice and administrative tasks. This position supervises Refugee Health clinical staff. Develops performance expectations and standards for all Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff based on personal observations and monitoring data. Provides counseling, consultation, and discipline, or ensures appropriate disciplinary actions are taken, to maintain the delivery of quality nursing care. Create, implement, and update monitoring tools as necessary to audit the documentation of supervised staff. Foster and sustain positive working relationships within the program to ensure effective nursing care delivery.

This position requires becoming credentialed in Refugee Health assessments as evidenced through the completion of Florida Department of Health credentialing policy.

This position requires an active Florida Registered Nurse license or a multi-state license from another Compact State.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides direction and operational support for clinical staff.

  • Supervisory duties include but not limited to, hiring and selection of staff, developing performance plans, and conducting performance appraisals.

  • Ensure direct reports meet or exceed program standards and objectives.

  • Interview patients, performs complete physical and psychosocial assessments.

  • Conduct regular staff meetings to disseminate information, obtain employee feedback, evaluate clinical operations, and develop improvement strategies.

  • Perform audits of medical records, monitors vaccine inventories, and supply levels to maintain an effective and efficient healthcare delivery system.

  • Investigate, assess, analyze, and recommend solutions to operational and programmatic issues and problems, and directs clinical activities daily.

  • Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training.

  • Decision-making both clinical and managerial.

  • Ability to handle face-to-face public interactions.

  • N95 Fit-tested Position – This position requires the incumbent to be fit-tested for N95 mask upon hiring and annually.

  • On-Call Assignment – This position has been approved in accordance with Section 110.209, Florida Statutes, Chapter 60L-32, Florida Administrative Code, and Collective Bargaining Agreements with the Florida Nurses Association (FNA) and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Florida Council 79. The approved On-Call form has been forwarded to the servicing human resource office.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum:

  • Active Florida Registered Nurse license or a multi-state license from another Compact State.

  • A minimum of three years supervisory, or charge nurse experience.

  • At least two years of experience with electronic health records.

    Preferred:

  • Bilingual fluency (read, write, and speak) English/Spanish

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN)

  • Work in a high-volume, fast-paced work environment, often requiring multitasking, and working in a demanding environment with diverse population of Refugee clients, large families, and a variety of foreign languages.
