Summary of Duties:

The Registered Vascular Technologist is a medical imaging professional that provides clinically relevant information to assist the physician with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Their role and responsibilities are under the direct supervision of the ultrasound supervisor. The Registered Vascular Technologist position is consistent with their education and training and in accordance with facility policies and procedures and applicable professional standards.

Primary Responsibilities of Registered Vascular Sonographer:

  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct ultrasound examinations in accordance with our facility infection control and patient safety protocols, policies and procedures. Follows all hand hygiene policies.

  • Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information. Ensure that the ultrasound examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard appropriate indications.

  • Evaluate any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient’s inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures.

  • Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the ultrasound examination ordered by the physician in accordance with the professional facility protocols. Proficient in all vascular studies including venous reflux exams.

  • Use proper patient positioning, equipment adjustments, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort and safety and to prevent compromised data acquisition and musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer.

  • Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform ultrasound examination.

  • Apply independent judgment during the sonography examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images.

  • Educate patients and family members about venous insufficiency and treatments provided at our facility during free screening and diagnostic venous ultrasound studies.

  • Identify any limitations and incidental findings in the ultrasound examination that might impact patient care. Report these to the ordering and/or interpreting physician and document in the ultrasound report.

  • Document procedural complications identified during follow-up ultrasound examinations.

  • Operate the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). Knowledge of IAC standards.

  • Review the examination images and enter patient data into the EHR reporting system. Submit to interpreting physician for review and completion of final report.

  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA) and facility policies, and procedures.

  • Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards.

  • Assist with the daily operations of our facility as directed by management.

Qualifications

Qualifications of Registered Vascular Sonographer:

  • Registered Vascular Technologist.

  • Sonography education, training, and experience in vascular ultrasound.

  • Demonstrated competence in Vascular ultrasound, including sonographer certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

  • Basic Life Support Certification.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills and software programs used to document report generation.
