Responsibilities
MAJOR DUTIES:
The purpose of this position is to serve as a Physician (Hospitalist) within a Defense Health Agency Medical Treatment Facility. The physician’s primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients.
The physician works under the general supervision of the Chief, Department of Medicine, who discusses policies and objectives. The physician does not receive direct supervision, and exercises considerable latitude of independent judgment in diagnosis, medical decision making, and the selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic procedures for patients. The physician works independently in accordance with standards of care and established administrative policies as an expert in the field of Hospitalist. Responsible for the overall management of aged patients admitted to the Inpatient Medicine Service. Examines patients, orders and evaluates the full range of radiology and laboratory tests, makes diagnosis and prescribes appropriate treatment to include oral and intravenous drugs, nursing care, and therapeutic dietary interventions. Serves as the gatekeeper to inpatient medical care from clinics, the emergency department, and other medical establishments. Provides consultative inpatient services to other healthcare professionals medical support staff. Provides referrals to specialized care professionals and facilities for chronic and acute medical conditions.
Performs as a Staff Physician of an inpatient medicine team, provides direct and indirect oversight of trainees on the care and management of patients admitted to the Hospitalist Service. Responsible for teaching and evaluating trainees in the Graduate Medical Education Residency program to include interns and residents as well as supervise nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and medical students.
Provides chart review for quality assurance purposes and may be asked to review cases for patient safety and risk management. Examines and conducts reviews of patients presenting medical management problems. Evaluates laboratory and clinical findings, differentiating among the various contributory causes, and prescribes appropriate treatment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be a US Citizen
Must be board eligible/board certified.
• Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).
• Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.
• Licensure/Certification: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
