Pacific Lutheran University HVAC Technician in Tacoma, Washington

Work Schedule:

Full-time; Monday-Friday; 7am to 3:30pm.

General Description:

The 

HVAC Technician is responsible for the operation and maintenance of heating, cooling and air conditioning systems in all 

PLU buildings and for the preventive maintenance of all air intake and exhaust systems. Reports to the Maintenance Lead.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain air conditioning units, chillers, gas furnaces and heaters, electronic and computerized control units, and related equipment on campus; inspecting and troubleshooting all equipment on a routine schedule.
  • Working closely with the Preventive Maintenance and Building Engineer in maintaining all building air intake, exhaust and filter systems.
  • Cleans/changes filters on specific units, lubricates motors, and equipment, change belts, repair and replace as necessary.
  • Coordinate with contractors as needed on  HVAC system repairs, including control service contracts.
  • Respond to calls for temperature control in buildings or routine problems and heating or cooling systems with coordination with Building Engineers.
  • Inspects and operates air-conditioning units and machinery to determine that all are functioning properly.
  • Reads thermometers and gauges, and records readings.
  • Maintains and repairs systems.
  • Tests efficiency of system and instruments and makes adjustments to thermostatic controls and blowers.
  • Tests joints and connections according to type of refrigerant used.
  • Repairs leaks and retests.
  • Drain systems by means of reclaiming system.
  • Operates systems for several hours, making adjustments to thermostats and valves to ensure proper control of freezing action.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning equipment and/or pneumatic and electrical control systems as applicable to work specialty.
  • Basic knowledge of computerized/electronic control systems.
  • Skilled in the use of tools of the trade.
  • Basic controls knowledge.
  • Must be mechanically inclined and able to perform emergency repairs in many areas along with the ability to perform delicate repairs.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently without close supervision.
  • Soldering and brazing experience.
  • Trained in reclaiming refrigerant and pulling a vacuum on a system.
  • Proficient with refrigerant gauges and circuit testing devices.
  • Basic electrical knowledge of high and low voltage.
  • Knowledge of basic piping strategies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in the field of  HVAC systems. Technical/trade school graduation or equivalent apprenticeship may substitute for some experience.
  • High school diploma or  GED.
  • CFC Handlers Certification.
  • Valid driver's license. (Must have had a valid license for at least 2 years.)
  • Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks, including driving abstract check, and pass PLU's internal Driver's Certification Training.
