SUNY Upstate Medical University LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse in Syracuse, New York
Position Overview:
Following established procedures, prepare exam rooms and patients for physician or physician’s assistant’s examination. Assist with procedures as requested.
Note: Although each LPN may be assigned to a specific physician, all incumbents should be prepared to act as backup for each other as needed.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
On a daily basis, access the EMR system to obtain patient list and appointment times.
On a daily basis review and prepare patient charts including:
Call for imaging and lab results
Call referring offices to obtain office notes and diagnostic testing results
Ensure a & b above are received in time for the physician to review prior to the patient’s appointment
Promptly, and in a friendly warm manner, greet the patient in the waiting room.
If the physician is running late, let the patient know.
Escort the patient to the exam room.
Room the patient including:
Taking vital signs
Update health history, medication list, and care team (primary care doctor, referring physician)
Respond to patient questions and/or refer to physician when necessary
Prior to leaving the exam room, accurately record all information into the EMR
At all times, present a professional and warm demeanor with patients and other staff; exude a patient driven attitude.
As requested by the physicians, be prepared to assist with a variety of basic procedures that may include:
Changing bandages and other dressings; applying steri-strips
Cleaning and irrigation of wounds
Suture removal
After each patient leaves the exam room, and prior to the next patient entering it, clean and prepare the exam room to include:
Ensuring it is sufficiently stocked with general supplies, including patient gowns
Prepare equipment for use, including ultra-sound machine.
Coordinate with other LPN staff members to:
Change sterilization solution in each exam room every 28 days
Inventory and order all necessary supplies ensuring that the supply is never at zero
In a timely manner, upon completion of physician dictation, prepare and disseminate letters to primary care and referring physicians.
Prepare employer doctor’s notes and any other correspondence as needed
As needed or requested, assist front office with scheduling or rescheduling.
As requested by the physician, call patients with test and/or exam results.
Promptly complete paperwork as requested by patient or a variety of reasons including FMLA and disability forms.
Respond to insurance company inquiries.
Safeguard patients right to privacy and confidentiality at all times.
Attend and actively participate in staff and other meetings as required.
Perform other duties as needed to accomplish job standards and/or requested by management.
Education, Training and Previous Experience Requirements:
Current New York State LPN certification
Minimum of one year experience in an outpatient medical practice office; preferably in the surgical field
Current CPR certification
Knowledge and Skills Needed to Perform Effectively in the Position:
Ability to interact compassionately with a diverse group of patients.
Excellent communications skills including written and verbal.
Good organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
Good time management skills
Ability to operate computer equipment sufficiently enough to complete job tasks.
Ability to learn and apply software necessary to accurately complete job tasks, including EPIC.
Job Related Physical Abilities and Individual Needs in Order to Perform the Job in a Satisfactory Manner:
Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend and stoop. Must be able to speak and hear sufficient to communicate with patients and others. Ability to view a monitor/screen and enter data. Ability to physically assist patients as needed.
