Southwestern Community College Career and Technical Education Success Coach in Sylva, North Carolina

Statement of Primary Purpose The Coach is responsible for providing direction, information, personal attention and support to students in the early stages of their selection and registration into Career Technologies programs at the college and success coaching to support student progression through career and technical programs. The coach will oversee administrative tasks involved with Work Based Learning and Apprenticeship opportunities at the college.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate student exploration and understanding of the world of work associated with SCCs Career Technologies and Health Sciences programs:
    • Provide proactive and individualized advising to new students within Career Technologies programs facilitated by an early alert/advising system powered by predictive analytics.
    • Employ Appreciative Advising model and Platinum Level Advising strategies when interacting with students.
    • Assist students with identification of their academic, professional, and personal goals, paths to those goals, and appropriate programs of study to meet those goals.
    • Collaborate with the Career Services office as needed for individual career exploration and planning.
    • Maintain notes of advising sessions to track contact hours, issues, and outcomes of advising sessions.
    • Monitor student academic progress for Career Technologies students within their first semester of college.
    • Provide outreach to at-risk students, encouraging participation in coaching appointments and other means of intentional intervention and student support activities.
    • Empower students to effectively communicate with faculty and staff and to become better connected with resources and support services such as financial aid, learning assistance, career services, counseling and learner access and equity.
    • Attend Career Technologies department meetings, engage with faculty/staff to remain current with departmental policies and procedures.
    • Make recommendations to direct supervisor, and faculty partners about improvements to design of success coaching delivery that could result in improvements in persistence and completion to maximize future implementation and scalability.
  • Coordinate Student Engagement in Work-Based Learning experiences to directly apply classroom and lab skills:
    • Promote work-based learning programs to recruit student and employer participation.
    • Assist with student placement in work-based learning (WBL) assignments.
    • Provide student orientations to WBL/cooperative education courses.
    • Collaborate with faculty, employers, and students to create appropriate learning outcomes for specific WBL assignments.
    • Serve as instructor of record for WBL/cooperative education courses.
    • Conduct site visits with students and employers during WBL assignments.
    • Facilitate the assessment of student learning outcomes during WBL experiences.
    • Maintain detailed, accurate records of WBL/cooperative education experiences as required for academic credit and college reporting.
    • Develop as appropriate regional apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships to serve the needs of employers and students

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with program advisory committees, career day, job fair events, and other activities for supporting student success

Minimum Qualifications Education

  • Bachelors Degree in academic counseling, education, communication, instructional design or related field required.

  • Ability to work with individuals of all socio-economic, cultural, and diverse backgrounds.
  • Minimum two years experience in college advising, success coaching, or related field.
