The Azure Cloud Hardware and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) team is seeking a highly motivated senior network systems engineer to work in a team of other hardware and software developers to create systems and modules to be deployed in Microsoft’s Azure Cloud. We are looking to hire a Senior Network Systems Engineer to be apart of the team. As a Senior Network Systems Engineer team member, you will work directly with engineers across cross-functional teams and deliver hardware designs from concept to data center deployment. Responsibilities will include interacting directly with Microsoft’s services teams, cross-discipline design teams focusing on the functional interfaces and developing test cases and qualifying the designs. This is an opportunity to leverage and grow your existing hardware design/validation experience and provide innovative E2E hardware solutions to Microsoft Cloud.

Responsibilities
Collaborate with architects to design and develop highly scalable network solutions. Provide feedback as these cutting-edge networks are deployed.
Create requirements based on architecture and track progress towards meeting those requirements. Partner with hardware designers and network operations teams to validate the quality, stability, and reliability of complex networks.
Define and set the overall validation strategy for network infrastructure. Drive internal and external teams to develop and execute test plans.
Perform NUDD (new, unique, different and difficult) technology and feature analysis and provide risk assessment and mitigations.
Ability to work across multiple disciplines (hardware, firmware, software, and/or data center infrastructure) to identify risks, drive discussions, detail system tradeoffs, and assess impact.
Develop high quality tooling, automation, performance metrics, and telemetry, at scale
Improve overall network optimization and efficiency through tuning network links, managing link budget, and other methods.
Partner closely with cross functional teams to define, assess risks, prioritize, and implement new technologies and features.
Drive teams to consensus to align on key milestones, technical decisions, and integration with a larger solution.
Act as a main technical point of contact for cross functional teams and customers throughout the NPI lifecycle.
Analyze new interfaces and subsystems to develop integration plans, analyze power efficiency, debug integration issues, and provide recommendations.
Define system behavior and concept of operations for the platform to ensure compatibility with Microsoft Azure datacenter software, serviceability, telemetry, and customer expectations.

Drive technical requirements and ensure the solution is flexible and scalable across the full (HW/FW/SW) stack.
Enable platform and solution level discussions, influencing architecture of the product, and delivering to product goals across quality, reliability, and performance.
Collaborate with internal, external, and open-source partners to onboard innovative technologies in a seamless manner.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications * :*
7+ years of technical engineering experience
OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience
OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
Proficient knowledge of network protocols, ethernet technology, and NPU understanding.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
Good grasp on the Ethernet - Physical layer, Network layers, Congestion control , QoS, Traffic Classes
Understanding on CLOS networks, routing protocols - BGP, ECMP, Lossless networks, Congestion handling -DCQCN, PFC, CBFC
Understanding on NPU architecture and relation to network performance like bandwidth, RTT latencies, Packet size diversity
Understanding on Networking hardware - QSFP-dd cables, DACs, AECs, Cable Backplanes, NICs, PHY, Switches
Ability to define validation test cases to qualify end to end network across functionality, performance and scale testing
Ability to trouble shoot network issues at multiple layers - Physical layer, Datalink and Network Layer, Protocol layer
Great to have: Understanding on AI Network, Network Collectives, Traffic profiles in AI networks, Ultra Ethernet
7+ years of relevant experience in system (compute, storage, networking, and/or accelerator) level design and/or implementation across the hardware development lifecycle.
Experience with hardware, firmware, management firmware, and/or software (system & application stack) interfaces across all modules in a system.
Experience leading validation strategies and debugging complex hardware technologies.
Experience assessing technical risks, driving solutions, and impact assessment.
Experience with RoCEv2 and other networking protocols.
Proven track record of bringing up, integrating, and deploying new hardware technology.
Knowledge about datacenters & operations at scale.
Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
