Position Summary
We are seeking a Health & Safety professional like you to join our Lake Charles team.
Experienced safety and health professional responsible for overseeing all aspects of employee wellbeing, while working with the site leader to ensure BSAM’s Line-Driven Safety process, expectations, strategies, and initiatives are successfully met. This includes a variety of tasks and responsibilities including but not limited to the following:
• Developing a trusted advisory relationship with all levels of management and line staff
• Fostering excellent cross-functional communications and teamwork, integrating safety and health activities across various stakeholders and owners within the functional, operational, and technical organizations at the site, with a focus on developing, implementing, and sustaining strategies for compliance and meeting business objectives
• Possessing the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others in sensitive situations, without damage to the relationship – includes internal and external parties.
• Collaborating with site leadership and providing day-to-day support for the plant’s occupational health & safety programs such as process safety, fire protection, disaster prevention, emergency response, industrial hygiene, security, and contractor support/management initiatives.
• Leading the way in driving and maintaining BSAM’s health & safety objectives by developing, implementing, and/or sustaining a comprehensive safety management system, effective strategies, demonstrating management commitment, fostering front-line leadership, and encouraging employee ownership.
• Providing technical support to plant personnel on matters related to health, safety, and industrial hygiene. This includes training and developing health and safety staff; and strengthening cross-functional collaboration at the site level.
• Identifying potential workplace hazards, unsafe equipment, work practices, and working conditions. Investigates accidents and collaborates with engineers, management, and health and safety regulatory authorities to identify causes of accidents and prevent their recurrence.
• Building and/or maintaining a high-performing safety and health team; has a personal focus, as a leader, on their development and the advancement of their professional careers, while elevating their involvement, influence, and success across the site’s broader organizational structure
Responsibilities
Promote and drive the successful completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual Line-Driven Safety activities.
Manage industrial hygiene activities including medical surveillance, air monitoring, noise, laser, ventilation, hazard communication, new chemical screening/approval, and radiation safety.
Provide guidance on regulatory and legislative matters (OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI, NFPA, WC) and oversee government compliance inspections and activities. Develop written programs, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance.
Promote occupational health & safety as well as process safety excellence through the execution of BSAM’s risk and compliance management systems.
Establish performance indicators (KPIs) and evaluate performance of site-based compliance initiatives while coaching and educating site personnel on EHSS programs and requirements.
Oversees, supports, and develops the plant’s Safety and Health Committee while fostering and promoting an effective working relationship with the plant’s local Unions; promotes and fosters teammate engagement overall.
Develop and utilize risk assessment processes for proactively identifying and evaluating hazards. Manage and assist with the mitigation of identified gaps, weaknesses, and improvement opportunities.
Collaborate with other BSAM facilities in effort to facilitate EHSS knowledge and share opportunities (e.g., risks, best practices, common audit findings, lessons learned), foster peer communication and interaction between groups.
Responsible for coordinating and documenting loss prevention activities, industrial hygiene activities, medical support, emergency preparedness, and site security activities as assigned.
Serve as a subject matter expert for OSHA PSM and EPA RMP programs. Position requires demonstrated experience in improving compliance associated with following elements: MOC, PHA, PSI, MI etc.
Develop and provide appropriate training to employees and contractors related to implemented EHSS programs.
Promote Behavioral Based Safety Programs; coordinate efforts for future VPP certification.
Willingness to lead by example and participate in other BSAM audits and assessments to include supporting other ongoing site EHSS initiatives (e.g., environmental).
Support the continued transition and integration of electronic data systems (e.g., ISN & Intelex etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree with 8+ years of experience improving and maintaining occupational health, safety, and process safety related programs; 5+ years of management / leadership experience.
Bachelor’s degree; 8+ years of relevant experience including 5+ years management or leadership experience
Or Master’s degree; 6+ years of relevant experience including 4-5 years management or leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Engineering or Science Degree and/or M.S. Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
Physical Requirements:
- Must be in good physical condition and able to don and use firefighting and HAZMAT spill response related personal protective equipment effectively
