Day to day of the job

As Senior Systems Engineer – Security, you’ll be part of the tribe responsible for ensuring the protection of REA’s internal and external Cloud environments, tooling and infrastructure, and making all delivery teams at REA more effective.

We work on a wide range of technical products and solutions as required by other groups across the company, such as cloud deployment tools, CI/CD pipelines, networking, security, monitoring and deployment. We also consult to our many product delivery teams across REA Business to help them bring their solutions to life.

The Senior Systems Engineer - Security supports the Group Security Tribe in the following ways:

  • Developing and communicating patterns for security, focused towards REA’s strategic business goals, in collaboration with security team members and other technical leaders across REA.

  • Walking the talk, working with other business and technology teams in delivering security projects aligned to the security roadmap.

  • Championing security and influencing business and technology stakeholders in its adoption.

  • Implementing, operating and supporting security tooling, services and patterns to support IT delivery teams.

  • Have a security industry perspective, evaluating or taking the lead on emerging technologies, understanding threats and how external products and services can be used and integrated.

  • Support major security incident response processes by providing technical security expertise.

  • Acts as an escalation point for security issues to on-call staff.

  • Engages with the rest of the Security team to continuously improve the security tools and services we provide

  • Participates in the research and contribute to security roadmaps to ensure that REA’s security capabilities, technologies and products are current and reflect the needs of the business

  • Provide technical consultation across the business on all aspects of Security Engineering

  • Mentorship and upskilling of colleagues within the Group Security tribe

Who we’re looking for

  • 5+ years experience in a security/systems engineering or related role

  • Experience with operating in a multi-cloud environment, or experience with multiple cloud environments

  • Proficient in at least one programming/scripting language (Bash, Python, TypeScript, Kotlin etc.)

  • Practical experience with building, deploying and maintaining applications in a production environment (preferably containerised applications in a cloud production environment)

  • Experience in implementing and maintaining common application security tooling e.g. CI/CD integrations, SAST/DAST, WAF, API & Bot Protection

  • Understanding of network topologies, protocols, routing and design

  • Strong Linux skills and experience working with open source tools

  • Solid understanding of web protocols, and the ability to spot abnormal or potentially malicious activity

  • Knowledge of common attack types, including how misconfigurations can lead to vulnerabilities

  • Proven ability to influence technical stakeholders to maintain or improve security posture

  • Strong problem solving and analysis skills, with the ability to think creatively

  • The ability to communicate effectively with highly developed written and verbal communication skills, especially presenting complex and nuanced concepts to a variety of stakeholders

  • Track record of continuous learning, with a love for sharing knowledge and helping others.

Nice to have

  • Experience with performing vulnerability assessments and penetration tests

  • Understanding of Zero Trust principles and architectures

  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines

  • Experience in working with agile teams and methodologies

  • Relevant academic or industry qualifications
