Position Summary


At Stony Brook Medicine, our Registered Nursesare critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses toactual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniquessuch as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Our valued teammembers provide care supportive to our patients' health and well-being, whileadhering to a medical regimen.

Our Ambulatory Nurses work in a fully accredited AmbulatorySurgery Center that provides efficient, high quality surgical services in aprofessional, friendly environment.

Duties of a Registered Nurse may include the followingbut are not limited to:

  • Assess the patient'scondition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with otherhealth disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate andintegrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients.
  • Develop a writtenindividualized care plan which includes teaching needs and dischargeplanning.
  • Administer direct carewhen professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.
  • Administer medications.
  • Practice infectioncontrol and participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment
  • Assumes responsibilityand accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assignedpatients. Communicates changes in patient's conditionand questions regarding patient care to Charge RN/Clinician.
  • Develops and maintainscurrent written plan of care for assigned patients. Setspriorities to meet the patient's needs. Sets patient goals andpriorities with the patient and/or family.
  • Provides documentedevidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and theirresponses and understanding of the teaching. Ensures thatpatient education and instructions are consistent with that of thephysician or designee.
  • Communicates and workseffectively with other staff and other departments.
  • Participates in unit orhospital based quality assurance activities or committees to contribute tothe advancement of the nursing profession at Stony Brook UniversityHospital.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions may involve exposure to infectiousdisease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elementssuch as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and berequired to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisissituations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressuredue to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified byOSHA as Category 1.

Qualifications


Teaching and Research Nurse 2 (Registered Nurse 2)

Required: Possession of oreligibility for a license to practice as a registered nurse in New York Stateand one year of post-licensure acute care* nursing experience. ABachelor's Degree in Nursing may be substituted for one year of the experience.


Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and at least one year of previous hospital acute care experience. Minimum of 2 years' experience or 1 year completion of an OR training program.


Promotion: One year of permanent competitiveservice as a Teaching and Research Center Nurse 1, Grade 14.


Acute care isdefined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usuallyless than 30 days), intense, and have a relatively severe to very severecourse, requiring knowledge and expertise in the vigilant monitoring of subtlechanges in the patient's condition, as well as ability to quickly recognize andidentify potential problems and conditions resulting from a previous disease.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen
  • Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
