Stony Brook Medicine (Stony Brook University Hospital) Pathologists' Assistant, Anatomic Pathology Support - Per Diem in Stony Brook, New York


Position Summary


At Stony Brook Medicine, a Pathologists' Assistantis a valuable member of our team, who will maintain & develop Grossing/Autopsy policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory agencies ( i.e. CAP, NYSDOH, etc.) and prepare Grossing Room for inspections. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties may include the following but are not limited to:


Surgical Pathology:

Preparation, gross description, and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens. Assure appropriate patient and specimen identification. Obtain pertinent clinical information, imaging studies, previous pathology reports and slides as indicated. Describe gross anatomic features of surgical specimens and prepare appropriate tissues for histologic processing and light microscopy. Select tissue when appropriate for special studies such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, electron microscopy, etc. Assist in collecting specimens for biobanking. Assist in gross photography. Perform frozen sections. Conduct administrative duties such as quality assurance as assigned. Participate in supervision of residents grossing and teaching of both residents/medical students as assigned.

Autopsy:

Preparation of human postmortem examination. Assure appropriate and proper legal authorization for autopsy. Obtain patient medical record and other pertinent data including laboratory data, imaging studies, and surgical pathology reports ( if any). Discuss with attending pathologist to determine the need for any special techniques or procedure at the time of postmortem examination. Notify the clinical staff and any other involved parties prior to the beginning of the autopsy. Coordinate requests for specimen sampling. Perform postmortem examination including external examination, in situ organ inspection, and dissection of organs with recording data such as organ weights, presence of body fluids, etc. Select proper tissue samples for histologic examination and other special studies if necessary (EM, culture, fluid analysis, etc.) Photograph body or organs when indicated. Assure proper restoration of the body for release to the funeral home and assure appropriate indication of any biohazards such as contagious diseases and radiation implants. Gather and summarize pertinent data for preparation of Preliminary Anatomic Diagnosis document ( PAD). Maintain proper autopsy files. Organize and coordinate the autopsy conference. Maintain equipment and supply stocks. Conduct administrative duties as assigned. Participate in supervision of residents autopsy techniques and teaching of both residents/medical students as assigned.

Pediatric Pathology:

Preparation, gross description, and dissection of products of conception, fetuses, and placental specimens. Assure appropriate patient and specimen identification. Obtain pertinent clinical information, imaging studies, previous pathology reports and slides as indicated. Describe gross anatomic features of specimens and prepare appropriate tissues for histologic processing and light microscopy. Select tissue when appropriate for special studies such as cytogenetics, electron microscopy, etc. Assist in gross photography. Conduct administrative duties as assigned. Participate in residents/medical students teaching.

Administrative:

Supervise grossing of Surgical Pathology residents. Maintain & develop Grossing/Autopsy policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory agencies ( i.e. CAP, NYSDOH, etc.) and prepare Grossing Room for inspections. Collect and maintain Grossing and Autopsy data for departmental QA. Didactic lectures on Grossing and Frozen section techniques. Conduct administrative duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required:

  • An Associates or Bachelor's Degree in medicine or related field.
  • Established verifiable records of satisfactory hospital experience in grossing/autopsy pathology.
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving, team building and communication skills.
  • NYSED Licensure as a Pathologists' Assistant or grandfathered PA Licensure.

Preferred:

  • ASCP certified as a Pathologists Assistant.
  • MA degree or BS from a Pathologists' Assistant program or will graduate from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program within the next six months.

  • Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
