Duties Description Reporting to the DEC Region 1 Regional Direction, the Assistant Public Information Officer (APIO) will be responsible for supporting the management of DEC Region 1’s public-presence, serving as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and providing timely and accurate responses to them. The APIO will assist with communication strategy development and will engage both the public and regional media outlets to promote awareness of DEC priorities, initiatives, and responsibilities. In addition to developing and maintaining relationships with members of the media, the APIO will also be responsible for assisting with outreach opportunities, attending events on behalf of the region, and working on both DEC announcements and the region’s social media platforms. Duties include but are not limited to:• Plan, oversee, and implement proactive media outreach, including attending and organizing events, drafting press releases, and serving as the primary point of contact for incoming media inquiries as part of an overall communications strategy;• Generate responses to media inquiries in coordination with subject matter experts;• Develop and disseminate traditional and social media content;• Attend conferences, meetings, interviews, and other public events, with the ability to participate in events scheduled on designated weekends or evenings as necessary;• Coordinate public appearances for Regional Direction and Region 1 staff, serve as spokesperson as needed and lead speaking engagement preparation;• Proofread and edit content submitted by others to ensure consistency and adherence to both AP and the agency's style guides; and• Perform additional duties as assigned by Region 1 and Central Office Direction
Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience in acommunications, public relations, or a marketing role.Preferred qualifications:Ability to work well in a team environment and manage multiple projects;excellent written and verbal communication skills; familiarity with New York State and the DEC’s portfolio; strong analytical skills and creative thinking; knowledge and experience working in the press, government, and/or public relations fields with prior experience developing and implementing strategic communication campaigns. Experience in multimedia including video, photo, and social media. Individual chosen for the position will be expected to work in person, with partial telecommuting opportunities, in the NYSDEC Region 1 Headquarters, Stony Brook, NY.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Travel may be required.Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required.Weekends and holidays may be required.
