Amentum Senior Mechanical Engineer in Stennis Space Center, Mississippi

Amentum, in support of the NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) at Stennis Space Center (SSC) in Mississippi, is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer III. NDBC provides quality observations in the marine environment to support the understanding of and predictions to changes in weather, climate, oceans, and coasts. NDBC designs, engineers, fabricates/integrates, tests, deploys, maintains/repairs 4 worldwide buoy networks: Weather Buoy stations, Coastal Observation (C-MAN) stations, Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean Array systems, and Deep-Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) stations. Program scope also includes data collection/analysis/storage/dissemination (via satellite/website/other means) of in-situ weather and environmental data from these systems.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Design, planning, testing, installation and operation of electromechanical systems in the marine environment.
Design mechanical systems and components that meet needs and requirements
Produce outline designs
Conduct experiments methodically, analyze data and interpret results
Test and evaluate theoretical designs
Identify, formulate and produce effective solutions to emerging problems
Evaluate final product’s overall performance, reliability and safety
Alter and modify design to meet requirements and to eliminate malfunctions
Prepare product reports and documentation
Engage in lifelong learning and develop new theories or methods
Requirements:
MS in Mechanical, Ocean, or Marine Engineering
At least 6 years of experience in design/repair/overhaul of marine systems, including hulls, appendages, superstructures, marine ocean structures, mooring, piping, power and cable systems.
Familiar with preparation of mechanical design sketches and specifications.
Familiarity with short order shop fabrication.
Experience with AutoCAD, Auto-Desk or similar 3D modeling software.
Preferred Qualifications:
Perform full lifecycle product development (design, develop, test prototypes, manufacture) producing prototype and production drawing packages
Writing and reviewing test documents/procedures
Experience with PDM system such as Autodesk Vault
Processing engineering change orders
3D printing
Knowledge of FEA
Materials knowledge
Prepare and present PDR and CDR for client
Mastery of the OrcaFlex software package for the dynamic analysis of offshore marine systems
Familiarity with the NDBC suite of sensor buoys and platforms including DART, Weather, TAO, and CMAN
