United States Fleet Forces Command INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ OCEANOGRAPHER in Stennis Space Center, Mississippi

Summary You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ OCEANOGRAPHER in the Ocean Analysis Division (N92)/Ocean Projects Department at the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS. Responsibilities You will be responsible for serving in the hydrographic sciences, engaging in collecting, processing, evaluating, and compiling hydrographic and bathymetric data. You will be responsible for evaluating existing procedures and software packages used to collect, process, evaluate, and incorporate hydrographic, bathymetric, geodetic, and geospatial data. You will extract bathymetric data from various databases toward the production digital data-sets. You will be responsible for collaborating with other technical experts to refine department-wide processes. You will be responsible for developing new processing for integrating data from external agencies into existing GIS data sets. You will be responsible for travelling on survey platforms as a Data Manager in accordance with NAVOCEANO INST 3120.12 series and NAVOCEANO INST 12410.8 series. You will be responsible for providing technical data collection assistance, data backup, downloading and processing support. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience using environmental survey data collection techniques, encompassing side scan sonar, geophysical and geotechnical data, acoustic, hydrographic, bathymetric data, and oceanographic environmental data. Experience managing data by creating and maintain databases, spreadsheets, tables, and other documentation for storage and tracking of data. Experience developing environmental support products by interpreting and describing relevant data, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and ArcGIS/ArcPro software. Experience utilizing software processing tools and packages to correlate marine seafloor and subsurface properties, bathymetry, and physical oceanographic properties. Experience using techniques for integrating and analyzing diverse datasets, ensuring data integrity, consistency, and security throughout the data lifecycle, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver actionable insights. Experience with new and emerging trends and technologies in data management and analysis. Experience using NAVOCEANO survey operations as well as the methods and techniques used to collect and process hydrographic and bathymetric data. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess General Physical Science Series, 1301 Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. - OR - Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Oceanography Series, 1360 Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. - OR - Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
