The NCDMV License & Theft Bureau is a law enforcement agency which enforces all State and Federal laws that regulate motor vehicle operations, sales, inspection, maintenance, and auto theft, and conduct investigations that prevent frauds, impositions, and other abuses upon the citizens of the state of North Carolina.

A DMV Law Enforcement Inspector I is a sworn state law enforcement officer whose primary purpose is to enforce the rules and regulations adopted by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and Chapter 20 of the North Carolina General Statutes. Inspectors conduct investigations into auto theft, odometer, and driver license fraud, and perform anti-theft examinations of vehicles, enforce dealer and manufacturer's licensing laws, safety inspections and emission laws, registration laws, mechanic lien, and abandon vehicle laws. Inspectors also disseminate DMV information to the public and inform and train inspection mechanics and inspections station managers on inspections laws, regulations, and procedures.

Inspectors must prepare affidavits, secure evidence, write search and arrest warrants, prepare court summaries to testify on dealer and inspection hearings, driver license/registration hearings as well as court proceedings in the State and Federal Courts.

Inspectors provide first responder assistance at accidents, fires, hazardous material incidents, and natural disasters, and they assist other Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies as needed. Inspectors assume additional responsibilities assigned by Supervisors, including special investigations, projects, and/or operations. Inspectors must provide accurate, timely information to the general public and other law enforcement agencies regarding the responsibilities of the Division and the License and Theft Bureau.

Inspectors are assigned to one (1) or more of NC's 100 counties, which comprise (7) Districts throughout the State, or at DMV Headquarters.
