We are looking for a team player who is passionate about data and finding ways to improve solutions for a diverse customer base. As our new Principal Data Operations Engineer you will be responsible for implementing the designs and standards provided by the Data and Integrations Architect. You will provide platform and application administration, configuration management, end user management, security and application level patching and upgrades as well as source code control, deployment and release management; and providing support services as needed.
You will provide operational support ranging from minor bug fixes to major enhancements and participate in planning for application replacement and modernization. The role involves collaboration across departments, establishing configurations and tools for efficient data and integration service consumption, driving continuous improvement, and managing vendor interactions to achieve organizational goals
Some of the day to day opportunities include:
Consulting with Data and Integrations Architects, Principal Developers and other CDO and OIT team members, as appropriate to maintain and enhance existing platforms in line with OIT strategies (e.g., API Led Connectivity, Cloud First, Mobile First, Secure Colorado, etc.).
Performing platform administration and support for applications within the Chief Data Office portfolio.
Working with Data Engineers and Integration Developers on data ingestion, data transformation and data presentation tasks and scripts, including automation of these tasks.
Establish automation of manual processes, including code deployment and environment provisioning.
Acting as Tier-2 escalation point for on-call/break-fix efforts, to diagnose and resolve incidents and problems with platforms and applications within Chief Data Office portfolio.
Working with SecOps resources to ensure network security policy is established in a consistent, repeatable and automated manner.
Collaborating with Business Analysts, Customers, Project Managers, and others as appropriate to assist in the creation of estimates and timelines.
Performing coding (in-house applications) or configuration management (COTS applications) in accordance with standards and best practices and further minimize defects through disciplined unit testing.
Coordinating update releases and other system changes, contribute to the implementation of break/fix solutions, and update documentation and configuration information related to changes as needed throughout the life cycle.
Organizing, build, and validate all segments of the code and configurations related to a specific build (release) through CI/CD pipelines.
Ensuring application maintenance and configuration activities are consistent with established service portfolio policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
Identifying and recommending changes to application and platform policies, processes, templates and standard operating procedures to improve the overall quality of services being delivered.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
A wide salary range is posted for this position and any job offer is based upon a salary analysis to comply with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The salary analysis considers relevant experience, education, certifications, and state seniority as compared to others doing substantially similar work. While all offers are compliant with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, there is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis.
This is a skills-based job announcement. The required minimum qualifications and/or education (if substituting for the proven experience, knowledge, and skills), are as follows:
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a data engineer, DevOps Engineer, or similar software engineering role.
A minimum of one year (1) of experience designing, building, implementing, and maintaining data and system integrations using dimensional data modeling and development and optimization of ETL pipelines.
Experience with API lifecycle management platforms and API led connectivity.
Substitutions:
Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.
Training or Certification related to the work assigned to the position will be assigned credit towards substitution for experience and/or education, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.
If the minimum qualifications include a degree requirement, additional appropriate paid or unpaid experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
Subject Matter Domain Expertise on the platforms (applications) used for the execution of the State Strategy for Data Sharing and Integrations premised on API led connectivity:
Snowflake - enterprise level data lake and data warehouse
Ipswitch MOVEit Transfer and MOVEit Automation - MOVEit consolidates all file transfer activity to one system to ensure better management control over core business processes. MOVEit Transfer provides the security, centralized access controls, file encryption and activity tracking needed to ensure operational reliability and compliance with SLA, internal governance and regulatory requirements like PCI, HIPAA, etc.
Informatica - enterprise level data catalog, data quality, data governance and data lineage management
Tableau – an enterprise level platform used to support data analysis and data visualization needs of the business and technology teams that OIT supports.
Current MuleSoft certification.
Experience with columnar and relational database technologies such as MS SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or others desired.
Familiarity with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
Experience using Azure DevOps.
Familiarity with source code management tools such as TFS or Git.
Conditions of Employment:
OIT employees must comply with any screening procedures in place at state entity locations where they might be required to perform work.
A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.
Positions supporting some agencies such as the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Safety will also require a pre-employment drug test.
This position may require travel within the specified geographic area, and to locations across the state as needed.
Supplemental Information

While candidates from out of state will be considered for this role, the candidate selected for the position must relocate and reside in Colorado on the first day of their new position.
