Requisition # 100224

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicineis a dynamic and innovative center dedicated to excellence in research, medical education, and clinical care. Our division is driven by over 80 faculty, clinician educators and instructors who are the pillar of strength in the Division's ongoing efforts into the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

The opportunity is for a research position to join our active group in theNarayan Labthat develops technology, computational modeling, and mathematical approaches to treat patients with heart rhythm disorders. The successful applicant will establish and manage a preclinical medical technology innovation program for two new technologies aimed at diagnosis and therapy of heart rhythm disorders. Through the lens of the new technologies, studies will also address unanswered questions of the mechanisms of arrhythmias in the ventricle. Our lab has a track record of fellows regularly receiving funding or research prizes. There is also the potential for medical technology prototype development and technology transfer. The position will provide collaboration with cardiac electrophysiologists, cardiovascular imaging specialists, and cardiothoracic surgeons.

Medical background: Atrial fibrillation and ventricular fibrillation are common arrhythmias worldwide, affecting a cumulative >30 million individuals in whom they may cause death and disability. Unfortunately, therapy is suboptimal. Our Laboratory develops new technology for clinical translation. We have a long track record of mechanistic insights and novel therapy. The team is interactive, collegial and collaborative. Our broader faculty mentorship team spans medicine, cardiology, biological physics, basic cellular electrophysiology and computational modeling and software engineering/artificial intelligence.

Duties include:

  • Design and implement experimental protocols for preclinical (in vivo) studies.

  • Develop and prototype new techniques in noninvasive imaging, electrophysiology mapping, and ultrasound.

  • Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, formulate, and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.

  • Write and/or edit content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.

  • Present research and represent the Lab at relevant conferences and participate in relevant programming on campus.

The successful applicant will be a self-motivated researcher and be able to contribute to and learn from an interdisciplinary team. The successful applicant will have formal training in any of these disciplines: bioengineering, medicine, physiology, biophysics, computational modeling, machine learning. Applicants should have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Duties include:

  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.

  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.

  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.

  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.

  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.
