The first new department approved as part of SDSS is theOceans Department. The oceans are earth’s last frontier and are vital for our health and future. The Oceans Department supports the critical activities needed for breakthrough ocean teaching and research and uses inspired research to drive fundamental discovery and impact, including broad interdisciplinary and system-based approaches to addressing global ocean challenges. Our mission and vision are amplified by strong and durable linkages to other existing and emerging units in the new school and across campus.

A critical and major component of Stanford Oceans isHopkins Marine Station (HMS)located in Monterey Bay in Pacific Grove, California. HMS has over a 130 year-long tradition as a renowned marine biological station with over 15 faculty, 15 staff, and 40 graduate students on site.

The Palumbi Lab seeks applicants for a Director of Field Research at 100% effort for a 1-year term at HMS. The focus of the research team is to conduct field and lab experiments on kelp forest environments emphasizing the role of DNA data in ecological, evolutionary, and conservation science.

A successful future member of the group will be a team player ready to work in the field, on genetics projects, and in setting up data analysis. The applicant for the position should be enthusiastic, organized, capable of solving problems, and able to communicate their findings effectively.

Your Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, test, and evaluate a variety of protocols for eDNA data collection and analysis.

  • Plan and manage coral grow-out facilities.

  • Plan approaches to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.

  • Independently conduct experiments and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes. Maintain data sets from a variety of sources.

  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.

  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.

  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.

  • Help with general lab maintenance and lab management as needed; maintain lab stock, manage.

  • Manage chemical inventory and safety records and provide general lab support as needed.

  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

To be successful in this position, you will need:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.

  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

In addition, our preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience conducting research (field and lab) on kelp forest environments.

  • Experience with eDNA data collection and analysis.

  • Experience managing coral grow-out facilities.

The expected pay range for this position is $26.44 to $36.54 per hour.
