JOB PURPOSE:

Work under the direction of faculty or other management to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the assigned academic entity/program(s) utilizing specialized/technical knowledge.

The Hoover Institution Center for Revitalizing American Institutions (RAI) is excited to support several national innovations related to civic education and citizenship. The Research Program Manager will work under the direction of the Assistant Director, with input and guidance from several Hoover Fellows, to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of programs related to two general areas of responsibility: strengthening civic education and fostering effective and ethical democratic citizenship. The Research Program Manager will support the director of the Stanford Civics Initiative (SCI) in the creation and implementation of the Alliance for Civics in the Academy (ACA), a national network of postsecondary faculty dedicated to preparing students to take up the rights and duties of citizenship. The Research Program Manager will also support the launch and implementation of several RAI efforts to revitalize civic education and American citizenship across K12 schools, colleges and universities, and civil society organizations.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Oversee and administer research and civic education activities by evaluating academic programs, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.

  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain citizenship and civic education trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the ACA and RAI civic education and citizenship programs.

  • Write and edit content for proposals, newsletters, publications, and other program activities under the general direction ACA and RAI leadership. Assist with the development of grants and stewardship materials, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support).

  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within RAI and develop communications for internal and external constituencies related to civic education and citizenship. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.

  • Monitor and manage expenses, budgets, and finances of the program in collaboration with Hoover, H&S, Political Science, and RAI teams. Assist in processing financial transactions and make recommendations on funding based on program spend.

  • Develop and maintain productive, collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including RAI affiliated Fellows and staff, faculty involved in the Alliance for Civics in the Academy, the Stanford Civics Initiative, and the Good American Citizenship Working Group, and Hoover Institution mission-support teams.

  • May oversee and train student workers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience in program administration and/or research related to civics and civic education. Advanced degree in a relevant discipline preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.

  • Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.

  • Excellent writing, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with high profile stakeholders, including fellows and faculty, staff, policy officials, and others.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of customer/client service and partnership environment.

  • Demonstrated solid planning and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong relevant subject matter knowledge.

  • Strong interest and/or experience in current affairs, academia, and politics.

  • Experience with and basic knowledge of skills in the production and management of podcasts, social media, websites, and publishing platforms.

The expected pay range for this position is $88,861-$102,254 per annum.
