The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) is Stanford University’s premier hub for interdisciplinary teaching and research on international policy and affairs. POSITION SUMMARY:

FSI seeks an experienced writer and program manager to serve as the Assistant Director of Donor Relations. Reporting to FSI’s Director of Development, the Assistant Director for Donor Relations will create and implement comprehensive, individualized, and high-impact stewardship plans, and write customized reportsletters, and other communications to acknowledge, cultivate, and engage donors to FSI. The Assistant Director for Donor Relations will help to devise and manage communication strategies for select groups of donors, including the FSI Council. They will play an integral part in the planning and implementation of key donor events, including twice-annual meetings of the FSI Council. The holder of this position will be a trusted partner to FSI’s development team, colleagues throughout the institute’s centers and programs, and stewardship colleagues in Stanford’s Office of Development.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Participate in defining the donor relations strategy for the school/unit portfolio of donors in adherence to the university's donor relations guidelines. Ensure messaging aligns with school/unit communications plans and strategic priorities. Identify key information, messages and topics.

  • Develop and implement programs that provide comprehensive reporting to donors. Communicate donor relations plans across the organization and/or school, department and with partner teams.

  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with gift officers to maximize engagement for their portfolios of donors. Build complete understanding of each donor's involvement and giving activity.

  • Oversee design and production of development materials from creation to deployment. Research, develop, execute and manage high profile written reporting on complex topics.

  • Develop, compile and edit supplementary materials that support written communication (i.e., backgrounders, biographies, briefing materials and talking points, and other related materials).

  • Responsible for the allocation of resources for donor relations reporting, the gift acknowledgment process, and donor relations requests.

  • Execute fiduciary responsibility to ensure that gifts are awarded and utilized in accordance with donor expectations and university policy in a timely manner. Resolve discrepancies and escalate when needed.

  • Proactively monitor and manage the donor relations needs of donors. Build a complete understanding of each donor's involvement and giving activity.

  • Coordinate with staff and development officers to develop and produce key donor relations deliverables, including written (hard copy, email or online content), video, or events.

  • Maintain open channels of communications with stewardship colleagues across the university.

  • Communicate donor relations plans across the organization and/or school, department, and with partner teams. Maintain open channels of communications with donor relations colleagues across the university.

  • As needed, manage vendors/consultants on specific projects and oversee key vendor and consultant relationships.

  • May manage program budget, goals and objectives in alignment with organizational goals, in partnership with director.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with FSI Development team, faculty, program staff, and Office of Development to create specialized materials to steward and recognize donors.

  • Writing and editing a variety of donor reports and communications, including some with financial reporting.

  • Establishing and maintaining an annual calendar of stewardship projects and donor activities

  • Working with regularity and fluency to track progress in CARD, Stanford’s Salesforce database for donor and alumni recordkeeping.

  • With FSI Development team, managing and implementing FSI Council meetings, including communications with donors and faculty.

  • Planning, assisting, and executing on a variety of donor and alumni events.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to communicate clearly and credibly on a diverse range of topics.

  • Comfort running and interpreting financial reports, researching expenditures, and formatting customized financial reports for stewardship purposes.

  • Strong client service orientation and attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization.

  • Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to set and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Comfort in a highly dynamic and often fast-paced environment.

  • Willingness to be part of a team and engage with the community at FSI.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.

  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities, with competing deadlines.

  • Ability to lead through influence.

  • Desire to learn about international affairs and use that knowledge for effective stewardship and donor engagement.

  • Facility with MS Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint, CARD (Salesforce); Google Docs. Knowledge of Adobe a plus.

  • Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver's License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, stand/walk, sit, use a telephone.

  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Non-commercial Class Driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $94,000 to $108,000 per annum.
