This is a full-time hybrid position requiring an ability to interact effectively with a diverse population of patients, visitors and staff. The Mental Health Assistant supports the agency’s psychiatry staff who provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management services to children and teens in our communities. This role requires flexibility, reliability, good judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively and efficiently, which may include these and other related duties as assigned.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Support Psychiatry staff by helping to manage client medication prescriptions and appointments with the Psychiatry Director and APRNs

  • Prepare patients for examination by taking blood pressure, weight, and height, and providing any necessary forms for completion

  • Communicate with patients by transmitting prescriber's orders and questions about refills, appointments and referrals

  • Schedule appointments and follow-up appointments; verifying times with patients

  • Complete Release of Information forms/document requests; follow up on requested documents in a timely manner

  • Regular and consistent communication with patients/physicians/pharmacies

  • Communication with schools to follow up on completion of patient diagnostic screening tools

  • Prepare prior authorizations, medication dispense consents for schools, and other letters as needed

  • Prepare medical records and maintain patient charts

  • Provide patient education about medication side effects, with provider instruction

  • Under provider direction, performs tracking and retrieval of patient lab/diagnostic testing results to facilitate timely provider review and follow-up

  • Accurately documents patient history and results from evidence based screening tests

  • If applicant is a certified medical interpreter, interpret sessions for clinical staff with Spanish-speaking clients, on an as needed basis

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Skills and Education

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish required; willingness to be trained as a certified medical interpreter

  • Associate’s Degree is required; college degree preferred

  • Experience in medical office working with electronic health records and e-prescribing systems

  • Flexibility to work after 5pm, weekdays only

  • Expertise in the use of Microsoft Office Suite 2010, including Outlook, Word and Excel

  • Familiarity with Electronic Health records

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments, work independently, accept direction and work effectively with people from culturally diverse backgrounds

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Hours will vary; our schedules range Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm and Saturdays.

  • Minimal physical effort. Must be able to operate computer and telephone continuously. Regular regional travel as necessary.
