Job Description Summary

As lead engineer the successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the delivery and application engineering of existing and new electronic applications, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid”. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.

The role of Lead Electronic Hardware Engineer gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised company in this exciting field. The role has a level of autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. A degree of judgment will be required at this level but can be supplemented by guidance where required.

Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there may be some international travels to collaborate with other GE teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers and contract customers.

Job Description

Scope of the role:

As Electronics Hardware Engineer, you will report to the Valve Converter Electrical Team Lead within the Valve Converter Engineering & Technology Function (Team who deliver development project and customer projects for the HVDC Valve Converter). The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition. The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field. Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be international travel opportunities to collaborate with other GE units, test laboratories and customer sites.

Responsibilities:

• The candidate requires a good level of the technical understanding and working experience of digital and analogue electronic design including power supply circuit, control and protection circuit of power electronic device such as IGBT and thyristor.

• The candidate should demonstrate a high degree of knowledge and understanding of electronic components and principles.

• The candidate is expected to have good knowledge and experience on testing to validate electronic circuit using prior experience and on-the-job training. It is required to have technical skills and analytic thinking to perform fault analysis and design improvement, this include performing bench level and high voltage testing.

• An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering methods and a willingness to share knowledge are essential qualities.

• Generate technical documentation such as test report and specification for electronic circuit.

• Performing routine and type test specifications and pre-commissioning testing of converter valves

• Product support during complete life cycle from development to tender and commissioning of project

• Expectation to travel 20% of the time across the world.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level in electronic engineering

Required Characteristics:

  • Able to work to deadlines with a high quality and accuracy.

  • Dynamic and proactive with ability to work on own or as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to resolve technical issues.

  • Has knowledge of HVDC. (Preferred attribute)

  • Has awareness of EHS compliance in design and engineering.

  • Has knowledge of digital electronic circuit design and development.

  • Has knowledge of analogue electronic circuit design and development.

  • Has knowledge of schematic capture supervision.

  • Has knowledge of PCB layout supervision including rules & constraints.

  • Has knowledge of electronic component selection, analysis, and qualification testing.

  • Has awareness of Controllership and ROHS/REACH compliance.

  • Has Knowledge of FPGA component selection.

  • Has experience of product verification (bench testing) and validation (integration testing) testing.

  • Has experience of electronic design for EMC.

  • Has experience of design for manufacture (DFM), test (DFT), industrialisation & design to cost.

  • Has some knowledge and experience of firmware code development. (Preferred attribute)

  • Has some knowledge and experience of model based product development tools (MATLAB, Mathcad, LTspice). (Preferred attribute)
