Trane Technologies Senior Building Systems Modeling Engineer, M&S in St Paul, Minnesota

We are currently hiring a Senior Building Systems Modeling Engineer, M&S who will be a member of our Model & Simulation Network of Excellence (NoE). In this role you will be responsible for the strategic development of HVAC System Modeling and Simulation capabilities and tools for HVAC & R products in electrification. This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule (3 or more days onsite a week) and will be based out of our St. Paul, MN - Davidson, NC - La Crosse, WI or Tyler, TX office location.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement state-of-the-art physics-based system models to enable energy performance predictions, and building analyses, supporting key strategic areas like electrification and decarbonization.

  • Understand and apply HVAC engineering fundamentals including building-related heat transfer and thermodynamics to create complex building simulation models or algorithms.

  • Work as building energy modeling Subject Matter Expert to lead the development and discussion in related project development from business units.

  • Lead the strategic development of HVAC System Modeling and Simulation capabilities and tools for HVAC & R products in electrification.

  • Demonstrate detailed technical understanding of Buildings and Grid Controls, HVAC systems, Demand Management, Energy conservation measures (ECMs) principles, and justify the impact on energy savings and CO2e reductions, using building energy models.

  • Work in a diverse team environment, which includes building performance engineers or application engineers and consultants, both domestic and international.

  • Work with other software developers within Trane to ensure consistency and integration of development efforts. Follow and help enhance departmental software development procedures.

  • Works closely with global team members, cross-functional associates and internal customers in dynamic environment, to understand the implications of modeling results and drive system level optimization and answer critical design questions through modeling results.

  • Lead the evaluation of new and innovative technologies as they appear for potential commercial value, either as disruptive competition or prospective new products or services for the company.

  • Conceptualize & develop project ideas leading to new advanced capability development in related domain areas to keep TT to the leading edge of technology.

  • Network across the organization to identify and communicate opportunities to apply Advanced system modeling and simulation to product design and processes.

  • Participate in long term technology roadmap development discussions and help build new external partnerships for Trane Technologies.

  • Lead internal projects and participate in external strategic projects and reports. Project progress for quality, deliverables, and cost.

  • Overnight Travel - approximately 10%.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with at least 7 years’ experience with building simulation development or thermal modeling required, OR – Master’s degree in engineering, Building Sciences or Controls and at least 5 years of modeling and/or simulation experience is required, OR – a PhD with an emphasis in Thermodynamic/HVAC/building sciences/controls and at least 3 years' experience is a plus.

  • Must be team-oriented with strong leadership and interpersonal skills while having the ability to effectively adapt to change (environment, requirements, roles, Objectives) and listen to internal customers and translate into accurate, actionable specifications.

  • Experience with HVAC systems modeling, building energy management systems or HVAC equipment and controls required.

  • Experience with energy management systems, load design and analysis simulation software such as TRACE or EnergyPlus is preferred.

  • Minimum three years professional experience developing building HVAC system model using modern C++, C#.

  • Understanding of object-oriented software architecture and software design.

  • Experience with the use of efficient coding techniques required and understanding of object-oriented software architecture including the design of data structures and functions.

  • Expertise with dynamic scripting languages (e.g., Python) and experience with version control systems (preferably Git).

  • Proven experience in all phases of the software development lifecycle.

  • Must have proven ability to perform and communicate effectively in a team environment.

  • Knowledge in the areas of Machine learning and Predictive Maintenance desirable.Experience with data science, predictive modeling, and surrogate modeling techniques is desirable.

  • Deep intellectual curiosity, Industrial awareness and very detail oriented. Self-motivated and willing to take on challenges to solve complex problems.

  • Effective critical-thinking, problem solving and organizational skills. Work well independently and as part of the team.

Base Pay Range: $100,000 to $140,000.
