Join a mission-driven team in the Data Technical Assistance Unit of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) where your expertise will contribute to protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans!

This position exists to lead the unit on research design, advanced data analysis and visualization, data modeling, and provide statistical expertise for the Minnesota Public Health system (Minnesota Department of Health and Local Public Health).

Working as a Lead Data Scientist, you will:

  • Develop, problem-solve and communicate highly technical data services solutions for local public health departments and programs at MDH.

  • Provide leadership and expertise to Data Strategy and Interoperability (DSI) and other Data Technical Assistance staff to increase the understanding of advanced analytics, visualization methods, and geospatial analysis (GIS) tools.

  • Uses qualitative and quantitative methods to develop and conduct evaluations for new programs and/or for areas with little or no procedural precedent.

  • Act as the Technical Assistance Unit Lead Worker, help to ensure that the data projects and efforts are aligned with MDH’s strategic priorities and goals, to provide support and expertise for local public health and community groups, and to provide data analysis, data systems implementation, and data related trainings for MDH programs.

This is a hybrid telework position that may require in-person meetings with external shareholders as well as in-office work in the downtown St. Paul location.

Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of experience working in health-related data management and analysis. This experience must include one or more of the following:

  • Research design

  • Data analysis

  • Statistical modeling

  • Data visualization and business intelligence

A degree in epidemiology, statistics, data analysis, public health, informatics, IT, health information management, or a closely related field may substitute for experience as follows: Doctorate degree may substitute for two years of experience; master's degree may substitute for 18 months of experience; bachelor's degree may substitute for one year of experience; associate degree may substitute for six months of experience.

Minimum qualifications to be assesses during the interview process:

  • Experience providing leadership and guidance to new staff and helping to build functional working teams.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to form working relationships with diverse workgroups and on different organizational levels.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent listening, analysis, and synthesis skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in epidemiology, statistics, data analysis, public health, informatics, IT, health information management, or another related field.

  • Sound understanding of public health, health care systems, health data, and health data interoperability.

  • Knowledge of public health data principles and practices.

  • Experience with public health data collections, management, analysis, visualization, and dissemination.
