Job Description:

  • Work Unit Leadership – Provides consistent positive leadership to achieve required results through all employees in assigned area. Delegates work assignments to employees. Insures that daily production schedules, objectives and targets are communicated to, understood by and successfully addressed by all employees. Frequently moves around in the area to check on employees, equipment and materials. Identifies problems and applies solutions as appropriate. Alerts management and appropriate personnel in other departments to any/all problems that interfere with achieving production targets. Assists functional manager with production planning and scheduling. Completes reports and production tallies for functional manager.

  • Resource Management - Employees - Maintains continuous contact with employees in assigned area to ensure that they understand job assignments, are carrying out assigned duties and receive immediate assistance in the event of problems. Schedules and assigns jobs to employees. Schedules overtime as needed. Ensures that all employees are properly trained. Uses various techniques including coaching, small group meetings, one-on-one sessions, positive recognition and/or discipline to cause employees to achieve desired results. Handles all 1st step grievances or similar dispute resolution mechanisms. Maintains familiarity with collective bargaining agreement (union organized plant) and/or employee handbook. Works with Plant Employee Relations Manager to resolve any people issues and implement Human Resources programs, policies and procedures.

  • Resource Management - Materials – Ensures that all machinery is working properly prior to start of the shift. Obtains and coordinates maintenance and/or repairs of equipment as needed. Checks to see that all materials – flour, ingredients, and packaging – are available when needed. Reports any shortages immediately to appropriate management personnel.

  • Safety – Ensures that work area is free of all hazards and employees are following all safety rules and regulations. Develops and maintains personal knowledge of safety rules and regulations. Conducts daily area tour (hazard analysis) and resolves any/all safety issues in an expedient fashion. Conducts accident investigations and prepares written report. Conducts regular safety briefings and orientations to ensure safe operations.

  • Quality & Sanitation – Directs production and packaging activities to achieve all product quality objective and standards. Conducts frequent evaluation of finished and in-process products. Looks for checking, imperfections, and non-standard appearance. Notifies and coordinates with QA representatives to resolve any issues or problems. Ensures that all employees are knowledgeable of Good Manufacturing Principles (GMP) and sanitation regulations. Conducts frequent tours of work area to check that machinery is working properly and employees are performing job duties in accord with GMPs and quality assurance standards.

  • Administration and Recordkeeping – Plans and budgets time efficiently; maintains files, reports in organized manner. Processes and completes all required schedules, reports, employee time/payroll records, grievance meeting notes and employee discipline documents in a timely, accurate and professional manner.

  • Product Quality and Food Safety Responsibilities:

  • As an employee of Winland Foods, you share in the responsibility for producing a food product that meets established specifications in regard to the following requirements: is produced and handled in a safe, wholesome manner in a sanitary environment; is properly manufactured and packaged to meet all quality standards; is free from adulteration, allergens and potential contaminants; is stored properly to remain free from damage and external elements, and; is properly loaded for shipment to customers.

DIMENSIONS:

  • The Supervisor position is an essential position in the plant and is responsible for the successful operation of a specified work area, function or department. Due to the high visibility of this position, incumbent is required to maintain a consistently positive, professional demeanor. In addition, the position includes the following:

  • Responsible for 1 to 30 employees dependent upon department/function, shift, and plant assignment. Position requires shift, weekend and overtime work as scheduled.

  • Required to report 30 minutes before start of assigned shift to complete pre-shift preparations and transition duties and stay after 30 minutes for the same procedure with the next shift (2nd shift is 3 pm to 11 pm).

  • The Supervisor position is eligible for pre-approved and documented overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 45 hours in a workweek.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFUL PERFORM MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Good planning and organization skills

  • Excellent communication skills – verbal, written and listening

  • Delegating, coaching and checking

  • Problem analysis and decision making skills

  • Interpersonal skills, patience, able to resolve conflict

  • Good basic math and quantitative skills

  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of machinery

  • Knowledge of food manufacturing processes; Good Manufacturing Practices; OSHA regulations; Quality Assurance and Sanitation standards

  • Knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (union organized plants only)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Position requires incumbent to lift 40 – 50 pounds. Stand for long hours on concrete floors. Climb ladders and steps. Must work in hot and humid environment with temperatures of 100 degrees. Must work in areas that may have wheat flour dust or other food ingredients. Visual acuity required for reading instructions and observing work processes.

MINIMUM/PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

  • A college degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience considered.

  • 1-3 years’ experience in a manufacturing supervisory capacity or approved equivalent. Experience with food processing a plus
