St. George’s University invites applicants

for the position of

Security Officer within the Department of Public Safety.

    Core Role

    Security Officer is the face of the department and the organization as it is the first person seen on arrival to study or work. He/she will provide a safe and secure place to live, learn and work while respecting everyone’s rights and dignity. DPS as a department supports the University as its goal is to make the experience of students, faculty, staff and visitors safe, enjoyable and productive.

    Specific responsibilities include:

    · Security Officers shall be alert, vigilant and observant at all times;

    · Patrol at a reasonable pace during their tour of duty and not stand inattentive;

    · Perform the duty as detailed on the duty roster, changes must be approved by a supervisor;

    · Escort or remove any persons from the campus – vagrants, offenders, suspicious persons;

    · Respond to all disorders, fires, thefts, burglary, vandalism etc., communicate and document to the Command Center;

    · Assist whenever an emergency occurs – medical, disasters or otherwise;

    · Ensure that all rules, regulations and policies are enforced and complied with;

    · Ensure that all persons and or vehicles entering campus have bona fide reasons to do so;

    · Ensure that persons visiting officials do have appointments and even if the person states that, call the Official’s office to verify;

    · Submit reports relating to all incidents/accidents which occurred or which may have come to your notice during your tour of duty;

    · Apprehend any intruder especially at night but caution must be taken for your own safety;

    · Hand in all items/articles found or which may come in your possession;

    · Attend all lectures, seminars and meetings when scheduled or assigned;

    · Maintain and uphold guidelines and procedures laid down by the University;

    · Work closely with other security officers, staff and faculty while performing your duties;

    · Adhere to the University’s core values.

    Work Environment/Physical Demands

    · While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

    · The ability to maintain good concentration while dealing with interruptions.

    Hours and Travel

    · A typical work week is 40 hours Sunday through Saturday and on any shift within a 24 hour period;

    · No travel is expected for this position.

    Required Qualities, Education, Skills and Experience

    · Secondary school education with passes in Math and English or two years experience in the said field.

    · Ability to work independently, as part of a team and collaborate effectively with diverse constituencies within the university;

    · Demonstrate high level of confidence in making strategic decisions, using good judgement and innovative and creative problem solving skills;

    · Strong communication skills, time management and customer service skills;

    · A commitment and personal responsibility for safety and safety concerns by practicing safe behaviors based on training and lessons learnt;

    · A sound knowledge of software applications typically used by the officers in the department;

    · Must be well organized and detailed oriented;

    · Must possess a valid B license.
