Job Description

Objective

The Engineering Assistant II is responsible for preparing surfaces, matching colors, mixing paints and other finishing , and applying to various surfaces (wood, drywall, steel, plaster/concrete, canvas, etc.) on all St. George’s University’s building structures.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare painting surfaces such as drywall, concrete/plaster, etc. by removing old paint, repairing holes, etc.

  • Fill holes and cracks with the appropriate fillers/material.

  • Selecting and using the correct tools, paints and/or sealants, vanishes, etc. for projects.

  • Matching, mixing and applying paints, sealants, and/or vanishes to various surfaces for long lasting finish.

  • Prepare surrounding areas by covering exposed surfaces and objects with plastic/cloth to prevent spillages and droplets.

  • Breakdown and clear areas of scaffolds, painting equipment etc after completion of painting.

  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to estimates project completion time and material requirements.

  • Knowledge of the use of hand and power tools applicable to trade.

  • Ability to mix, select, and apply surface coatings to successfully match existing interior and exterior surfaces.

  • Skill in wooden surface preparation, staining and/or sealing techniques.

  • Experience in applying coatings and/or caulking and completing repairs to interior and exterior surfaces.

  • Knowledgeable in selecting and applying paint and associated products.

  • Understanding of health & safety practices and regulations.

  • An eye for detail.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, and staff.

    Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Proper use of PPEs depending on the materials to be worked with.

  • This job is physically demanding. Requires heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds and crawling or crouching in restricted areas. Must be capable of climbing and working from ladders up to 36 feet.

  • The ability to maintain good concentration while dealing with interruptions.

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Hours and Travel

  • A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday with flexible start, lunch break and end of day.

  • Weekend and overtime work will be as is required.

  • No travel is expected for this position.

    Qualifications

  • High School Diploma plus 2 years painting experience.

    OR
  • Five years experience in the field of painting.

  • Valid Drivers license.
