CITY OF ST GEORGE Police Officer Level I, II, or III in ST GEORGE, Utah

This position is ONLY open to applicants who:

  1. Are currently Utah POST Certified Police Officers, or

  2. Are currently certified to perform the functions of a police officer in a different state and can

successfully obtain a waiver from Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training, or

  1. Are CURRENTLY S.F.O. Certified AND attending the L.E.O block of a Utah POST

Academy

Hiring processes will be initiated based upon application and/or interview scoring.

Interview and testing dates will be arranged after the applications have been reviewed for eligibility. We will

work with applicants to accommodate their scheduling needs and accommodate in-person and video

interviews.

For applicants who are certified in a different state that make the hiring list, limited pre-employment processes

will begin based upon a conditional job offer. Once the applicant obtains their Utah Certification the

remainder of the hiring process will be expedited.

Please Note: Openings will be filled based upon interview score rankings established during the interview

process for this posting. General hiring order, across all hiring lists for Police Officer I, II, III applicants will

be based upon the applicants' availability to start work (taking into consideration the pre-employment

screening processes an applicant has completed and/or needs to complete).

Salary & Benefits

Pay will be determined based upon experience and qualifications compared against current St. George

Police Officers' tenure and wages.

Starting salary will be determined based on years of service and qualifications.

Ranges as of December 2023:

Police Officer I -- Starting Salary: 54 ($58,471 - $84,054/year)

Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $84,054/year, which is the maximum

salary for this position as of December 2023.

Police Officer II -- Starting Salary: 60 ($64,985 -- $97,477/year)

 

Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $97,477/year, which is the maximum

salary for this position as of December 2023.

Police Officer III -- Starting Salary: 63 ($69,982 - $104,972)

Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $104,972/year, which is the maximum

salary for this position as of December 2023.

Position Summary

Performs a variety of highly trained law enforcement procedures for the City of St. George to protect and

maintain the well being of the general population of the City.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following

tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all

functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

Police Officer I:

  1. Effects an arrest within training guidelines and department policy and using that amount of force which is

reasonable and necessary in accordance with policy and law.

  1. Prepares investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and

mathematical computations.

  1. Exercisesindependent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when

probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.

  1. Operates a law enforcement vehicle during the day and night in e mergency situations involving speeds in

excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog,

smoke, high winds, rain, ice, and snow.

  1. Communicates effectively and cohe ently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and

responding to radio communications.

  1. Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims,

witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.

  1. Pursues fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting

a law enforcement patrol vehicle; lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling

oneself up over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces; climbing through openings; jumping

over obstacles, ditches, and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces;

and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.

  1. Loads, unloads, aims, and fires, from a variety of body positions, a handgun, rifle, and other agency

firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency

prescribed in certification standards.

  1. Performs searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and

detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles

and persons.

  1. Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.

  2. Engages in law enforcement patrol functions, including such things as working rotating shifts, walking on

foot patrol, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.

 

  1. Effectively communicates with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions,

mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.

  1. Demonstrates communication skills in court and other formal settings.

  2. Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions

and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.

  1. Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views and opinions of suspects and other

people encountered in an antagonistic environment.

  1. Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including directing traffic for long

periods of time; administering emergency medical aid; lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from

dangerous situations; and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.

  1. Processes and transports prisoners and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other appropriate

restraints.

  1. Puts on and operates a gas mask in situations where chemical munitions are being deployed.

  2. Extinguishessmall fires by using extinguisher and other appropriate means.

  3. Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such

documents as citations, affidavits, and warrants.

  1. Serves as an agent of the court in serving warrants, subpoenas,summonses, etc.

  2. Processes arrested suspects, including taking their photographs and obtaining a legible set of inked

fingerprint impressions.

  1. Performs duties that actively prevent or detect crime and enforce criminal statutes or ordinances.

  2. Responds to situations involving threats to public safety and making emergency decisions affecting the

lives and health of others.

  1. Performs duties that consist of providing community protection.

  2. Performs other related duties as required.

NOTE: The successful applicant must be able to perform ALL of the above essential job functions of an

experienced police officer, unassisted, and at a pace and level of performance consistent with actual job

performance requirements. This requires a high level of physical ability to include vision, hearing, speaking,

flexibility, and strength.
