JOB SUMMARY General law enforcement to preserve public peace, protect lives, property and rights of the public as well as to enforce statutory law and municipal ordinances.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently, achieving goals without direct supervision as well as in a team environment.
  • Methods, procedures and policies of the town, including city ordinances, employee manual, policy and procedure manuals, contracts, publications and reference texts, etc.
  • Current methods of law enforcement and established law enforcement procedures.
  • Functions and interrelationships of the town, state and local law enforcement agencies and other governmental agencies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with data entry, MS365, basic cyber protection.
  • Use and maintain a variety of law enforcement equipment including firearms, radio, video equipment, tape recorder, police vehicle, identification kit, intoxilyser, ASP baton and pepper spray.
  • Ready to respond at a moment's notice to any situation related to the responsibilities of the position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform duties and complete responsibilities under stressful or dangerous conditions, often involving considerable personal risk or risk to others.
  • Make swift, sound and educated decisions while reacting calmly and quickly in emergencies.
  • Patrols city streets and neighborhoods to deter crime or apprehend and/or arrest violators or suspects who violate federal, state or city ordinances.
  • Monitors radio calls; communicates with radio dispatcher and responds to complaints; reports of criminal events; requests for law enforcement and domestic or public disputes; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments.
  • Secures crime scenes; gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, informants and suspects; performs searches of people, vehicles and building; takes and file photographs; take detailed confessions; prepares investigative reports of findings, facts and related information; makes arrests and processes arrested suspects; detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis for probably cause for criminal acts; testifies in court.
  • Conducts accident investigations providing first-aid for injured, taking safeguards to prevent further accidents; interviews principals and witnesses, taking written statements from drivers and witnesses; examines vehicles and roadways, observing traffic control devices and obstruction to view; takes necessary street measurements; clears the scene of obstructions and wreckage.
  • Acts as custodian of personal property and evidence being held for court presentation; maintains records of property, evidence and automobiles held or impounded.
  • Enforces traffic laws and regulations; detects traffic violators; issues parking violations; performs traffic accident investigations and makes reports; facilitates the movement of traffic and pedestrians around accidents, disabled traffic control devices or heavily congested areas; assists disabled motorists; escorts or directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings.
  • Prepares, obtains and serves arrest warrants; serves legal documents.
  • Completes and/or reviews paperwork documenting shift activities, offenses and accidents, victim and suspect statements and other related information; completes state report documents to accurately record cri inal offenses; prepares incident reports, arrest reports and lab and property sheets; organizes and files records; enters information into computer.
  • Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image for the department and to build cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community; provides crime prevention/ safety services to the community.
  • Assists citizens on civil matters; assists children in need of services, children at schools; assist personnel and local agencies to include Mike Durfee State Prison, Bon Homme County Sheriff's Department and SD Game, Fish and Parks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a High School Diploma and/or GED and one (1) year of experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training certification.
  • Valid SD Driver's License with acceptable record.
  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must be willing to submit to all required law enforcement background checks. Must be free of any felony convictions.
