The Security Specialist role is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of VOA programs through performance in security related duties, policies, and activities. This includes developing relationships with VOA's participants and clientele in order to remove barriers of communication which will allow for effective response and risk reduction.

 

As a point of contact for anyone who needs security services, the Security Specialist is responsible for the baseline safety of VOA programs in order to allow them to continue effective operation. This is achieved through effective communication in regards to dispatch assignment, property oversight, documentation of incidents, in addition to harm mitigating strategies for group and individual de-escalation. The Security Specialist holds the expectation of being a point of contact for emergency response which includes communication with emergency personnel, victims of the emergency, and follow up communication with the appropriate parties. This role requires stationary work (dispatch) in addition to mobile response. Depending on department needs and individual preference, the Security Specialist will either perform one or both of these tasks in any given shift. 

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position with 30 work hours per week minimum. Scheduled shifts will fall Sunday-Saturday (typically in four or five day increments) with some holiday requirements. Scheduled shifts vary between day (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM) and night (5:00 PM - 3:00 AM) shifts and will be decided on employee availability and program needs.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following: 

Provide support, safety and security for residents, shelter guests and Volunteers of America (VOA) staff at VOA location(s) assigned. 

Based on assigned location, maintain a working knowledge of:  

Property guidelines, resources and participants for multiple different sites and shelters. 

Multiple sites' physical layout to provide consistent security. 

Local law enforcement assigned to the respective site(s). 

Provide crowd control as needed 

Adhere to policy regarding trespassed persons. 

Provide crowd control for all VOA locations assigned.  

Conduct interior and exterior walks throughout your shift and review cameras. 

Observe and report any suspicious, illegal and/or criminal activity. 

Observe and report all lease and/or program agreement violations.  

Document events throughout each shift; complete the nightly shift report and other required forms (Incident Reports, Proof of Service, etc.); share information with all necessary parties through email by the end of each shift. 

Work with and respect all VOA clients, regardless of circumstances, behaviors or needs.  

Help to identify clients who may require additional support/services to maintain their housing and communicate these needs to their case manager. 

Remaining awake, alert and available throughout each shift including overnights.  

Maintain situational awareness and continually access surroundings.  

Deliver/Post legal documents; explain the documents to those we serve; complete and turn in Proof of Service forms in a timely manner.  

Ensure that all documentation is complete and valid
