Salary: $25/Hour

POSITION SUMMARY: The City of South Bend seeks two highly motivated legal interns to join its legal team this summer. The selected individuals will conduct legal research, work closely with the City's attorneys in answering legal questions and advising the City administration, its employees and citizens of current legal standards, and perform other tasks as assigned.

SCHEDULE: Normal business hours 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Pay Rate: $25.00

PER HOUR SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

They will expand their knowledge of core legal practice areas while gaining insight and first-hand experience of government in action and how it affects City residents

Position Requirements

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Critical competencies for a South Bend Legal Intern include, but are not limited to, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, time-management and accountability. The following list represents the types of duties that may be assigned under the guidance of a department attorney:

Research and analyze various legal questions pertaining to issues arising in various departments of the City and produce an accurate and polished final work product, including memoranda and written correspondence.

Assist in preparing legal opinions and drafting court pleadings.

Examine and interpret property title reports, deeds, surveys, and a variety of contracts.

Draft responses to inquiries from the public regarding the interpretation and enforcement of the South Bend Municipal Code.

Work with City boards and their attorneys to update City ordinances and policies.

Attend City board meetings and other meetings as desired.
