Maintenance worker / Water Sewer Crew

JOB DESCRIPTION: Incumbents hold responsibility for skilled work in the operation of heavy duty vehicular equipment during the construction, repair and maintenance of city services and facilities. Work is performed with little supervision within established policies, procedures, and standard equipment operation techniques, and is reviewed by superiors during progress and upon completion. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of backhoes, large front-end loaders, and similar equipment, which entails considerable manipulative difficulty in operation. Work also involves manual labor in the performance of unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature involving maintenance, repair and construction of streets, alleys, water/sewer lines and mains, street signs and related facilities. Work may also involve operation of power tools and light duty automotive and related equipment as necessary adjunct to performance or regular assignments, or on a relief or seasonal basis. Assignments are usually received in the form of specific orders to accomplish a specified task. Tasks performed include: (1) work as a member of a water/sewer maintenance crew; (2) assists in building manholes; (3) clean manholes and sewers; (4) unstop sewers by using rods, pressure cleaners, and other specialized sewer equipment; (5) patch holes in streets and driveways; (6) assist in installing, maintaining, and repairing water/sewer lines; (7) repair leaks in meter boxes; (8) work as a member of street construction/maintenance crews performing such tasks as mixing, pouring and shoveling asphalt and concrete, raking, tamping and smoothing asphalt; (9) dig out holes and trenches with manual and automatic digging tools and fill depressions with slag, gravel or other materials; (10) operate power tools when necessary such as power saws, jackhammers, etc; (11) wash and lubricate vehicles used by crew; (12) maintain and perform minor repairs to equipment; (13) perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Operation and servicing of heavy-duty automotive and related equipment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Operating characteristics and servicing of one or more types of heavy automotive and related equipment. Work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations. Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment. Operating and servicing of heavy duty automotive equipment which includes backhoe, dump trucks, front-end loaders, and similar equipment. Possession of valid Texas C drivers license. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Make operating adjustments and recognize operating efficiencies in assigned equipment. Climb on equipment without assistance, perform manual labor under conditions involving extremes of heat and cold, and be exposed to sunlight, stooping, bending and lifting a minimum of 100 pounds. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and City Officials.
