POSITION SUMMARY

Performs all mechanical work on rail car and non-revenue equipment, parts production and repair.

Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works on hydraulic, pneumatic, HVAC, electro-mechanical and other systems related to service and non-service equipment.

  • Maintains, repairs, and rebuilds locomotive cranes, snow fighting equipment and various other non-revenue vehicles.

  • Operates various types of machines such as lathes, shapers, milling machines, boring mills, radial and stationary drill presses and other machines.

  • Sets up and aligns work so that new or used parts of accessory equipment may be machined for proper setting and reassembling.

  • Uses precision measuring instruments adhering to very close tolerances.

  • Performs precision bench layout, assembly, repair and maintenance work on shop machinery and tools to keep them in proper working condition.

  • Prepares and makes jigs, fixtures, and dies from blueprints.

  • Installs various sub-assemblies and components onto rail car trucks and cars to include traction motors, drawbars, wheels, axle units, brake units, air conditioning compressors, hydraulic pressure control units and other similar units.

  • Inspects various components and housing apparatus for leaks, cracks, wear and tension.

  • Inspects, adjusts, aligns, and tests the various rail car components.

  • Utilizes various testing equipment and precision instruments directly related to the job at hand to determine the cause of unit and part malfunctions.

  • Reads and interprets diagrams, schematics, blueprints, sketches, bulletins and other materials necessary to perform assigned maintenance functions.

  • Instructs apprentices and employees in sub-journeyman classifications in various elements of the Machinist trade.

  • Reports to the Foreman any unsafe practices and/or working conditions existing in the work area.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Required to submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Transportation Administration

  • Required to furnish the essential hand tools used on this job

  • Required to perform the physical activities associated with this position

  • Required to possess a minimum of five years verifiable experience as a machinist in a recognized machine shop.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Required to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Required to walk, stand, bend, kneel and climb.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must be proficient in the use and operation of the various machines and hand tools used in machinist work

  • Must be proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints

  • Required to understand written and oral instructions

  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of basic arithmetical operations including fractions and decimals

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Exposed to usual shop noise, solvents, grease, dust, moving equipment, etc.
